The Cheboygan Area Public Library provides you with six “Instant Borrows” each month, which means that you can have immediate access to whatever title or item you want without waiting in line for popular items. These Instant Borrows will reset every month automatically. Plus, you can borrow more than one item at a time.

Books will be available for 21 days, videos are available for 72 hours, and music titles are available for seven days after you borrow them.

Other digital services the library continues to offer includes:

  • The Up North Digital Collection, which is through Overdrive and can be used on a desktop or through the Libby app on mobile devices

  • Kanopy, which can be used on desktop, mobile device or streamed through a smart TV

  • Consumer Reports Online

  • The Michigan E-Library services (MeL)

To access any of these services, visit cheboyganlibrary.org and click on the “Looking For” drop-down menu. On this menu, select “Your Digital Library” and a new drop-down menu will list all your digital resources: the Cheboygan Democrat, Consumer Reports Online, Interlibrary Loan Request, Kanopy, Michigan eLibrary Resources, the Surprise Me! Book Request Form, and Up North Digital-Overdrive.

Classes will be forthcoming on how to use these resources for anyone interested. In the meantime, if you need or want some one-on-one Tech Help, the library can assist you. The Cheboygan Area Public Library is offering free personal tech help for the community on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call or stop in at the library to schedule your time with a library staff member who is ready to help with a variety of devices such as phones, laptops, tablets and e-readers. Appointments are encouraged but drop-ins are welcome as well, with priority given to appointments.

Tech help can also be a great time to learn how to use the library’s digital services. Just ask for a lesson on Overdrive, Libby, Kanopy, Hoopla, Consumer Reports Online or MeL. You can also ask about navigating our website or using email or setting up Facebook, or any other tech-related issue you are having.

Looking ahead, the Cheboygan Area Public Library will be hosting the annual community quilt show the month of March. Anyone interested in displaying their quilt(s) are encouraged to drop them off at the front desk of the Library with their name and contact information during the month of February.

All items will be stored in a safe place then put on display with the help of the Rivertown Patchworkers Guild, who meet regularly at the Library on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. Anyone interested in joining their group or just seeing what they do is welcome to stop in at one of their meetings.

On a side note, Emily says farewell: A.A. Milne wrote, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” And I certainly feel that way right now, dear friends and family — and yes, the Cheboygan community has been my family for nearly 10 years now. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to you all. I cannot express how thankful I am for the overwhelming love I have received recently. I am speechless by how so many people can be so kind-hearted and caring. I am so proud of my community right now! And I thank all the special people who have made me feel welcome and appreciated as a part of such a great community. Nicholas Sparks wrote that “this is not a goodbye, my darling, this is a thank you.”And I sincerely feel that way.

Life brings changes, but those who have impacted our lives stay with us as that change takes us to new places. However, as it is time to say goodbye, I want to again thank you for everything and wish you all well. So, as P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins says, “Well, au revoir, one and all.”
