Library Lines: Learn how to promote your organization

Mark your calendars. The Cheboygan Area Public Library is hosting a great class (two classes actually) on March 5 that will help you take your business marketing, your social media presence, your office/school presentations, and your graphic design skills to a new level.

This class, taught by professional marketing and business coach Jeremy Mullens from Grand Rapids, will introduce an incredibly useful and free online tool called Canva.com and it will have you creating fantastic fliers, professional newsletters, amazing videos and more — in one afternoon.

Canva.com is a graphic design platform with professional templates to help anyone and everyone create amazing and beautiful marketing products such as newsletters, fliers, social media posts, magazines, websites, videos, newsletters, presentations and more. And the platform is free. Yes, free. Of course, there is a pro version that allows an upgrade to more material and resources, but the free platform has great features to get any user started. Plus, the company behind Canva.com is community-minded and will offer nonprofits pro for free if they apply for it.

The “Starting with Canva.com” class will be 10:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. March 5 and will provide a tour of the tools available on Canva.com, show how to set up preferences and organize files, as well as allow you to put together your own graphic.

An “Advanced Settings with Canva.com Pro” class will be 1-4 p.m. March 5. This class will teach students how to build their identity system for brand recognition, develop social and cross-platform awareness, plus show how to create videos, edit photos and graphics and more.

The class fee is $15 per class or both classes for $25. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop or tablet/iPad (with canva.com app already installed) to the class so they can get hands-on practice. Free wi-fi is readily available at the library. Registration is required — feel free to call the library at 627-2381 or visit at 100 S. Bailey St.

Canva.com is a great resource for nonprofits, businesses, entrepreneurs, high school or college students and any social media user.

Another great program taking place at the Cheboygan Area Public Library is a program entitled “Alice’s Ordinary People.” This program has two parts. First, there will be a showing of the film “Alice’s Ordinary People” at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10. This will be followed by a live online presentation by the filmmaker Craig Dudnick at 6 p.m.

This film is the story of Alice Tregay’s life and decades of her fearless activism in the ongoing fight for race equality.

“Alice’s life story reads like a history of the [Civil Rights] movement,” says Craig Dudnick. “But it was through her Political Education class that Alice had her most significant impact. … This new force was integral to the re-election of Ralph Metcalf to Congress … to the election of Harold Washington, mayor, and to making Barack Obama, our first African-American president.”

The film showing will take place in person at the library and filmmaker Craig Dudnick will be live via Zoom. Those attending in person will be able to experience both parts of the program that night. Though the program will be of interest whether you have seen the film or not, those attending via Zoom are encouraged to see the film at their convenience, which they can do for free via Kanopy when they sign in with their Cheboygan Area Public Library card.

To access Kanopy, visit cheboyganlibrary.org and click on the “Looking For” tab at the top of the page. Then click on “Your Digital Library” on the dropdown menu, then Kanopy on the list of digital library options.

The Zoom address for Craig Dudnick’s presentation will be posted on the library’s calendar of events and on Facebook. If you want to type it in manually this is the address to register for the meeting: bit.ly/3p9EZVW. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Another fun class that will be taking place at the Cheboygan Area Public Library is a Wool Applique Journal Cover workshop. This class will be 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m, Saturday, March 19. Students will learn how to do wool applique and will have a cool handmade journal cover (with a journal) to take home. The class fee is $15 per student and covers all materials and instructions. Registration is required; feel free to call the library at 627-2381 or visit at 100 S. Bailey St.

Lastly, during the month of March, the library will be wrapped in the warmth of beautifully crafted quilts for the 2022 Community Quilt Show. This is an annual event (minus a break during COVID) that began in 2009 and is well-loved by quilters and non-quilters alike.

The quilt show is free to participate in and free to visit. And the library is now accepting quilts for display. They can be dropped off at the front desk and picked up promptly after the show concludes. Don’t miss an opportunity to show off your fantastic quilts if you are a quilter or have a quilter in the family. We look forward to seeing all the amazing quilts.
