Library Lines: What lurks beneath the water?

Living in our lovely piece of Michigan along the Great Lakes, you have likely had the opportunity to play in the water in some way, whether it was swimming or boating, fishing or diving. But do you know what lurks beneath the water? Now is your chance to find out with a paranormal exploration of the “Lake Monsters of the Great Lakes” with Michigan-based author and cryptozoologist Shetan Noir at 6 p.m. Feb. 21.

As defined in Merriam-Webster, cryptozoology is “the study of and search for animals and especially legendary animals (such as Sasquatch) usually in order to evaluate the possibility of their existence.”

The first library blood drive of 2023 will take place 1-6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Cheboygan Area Public Library with the support of Versiti Blood Centers of Michigan. There are both whole blood donation appointments available as well as a few double-red donation appointments. Appointments are encouraged but drop-ins are welcome as well, with priority given to appointments.

All blood donated with Versiti Blood Centers stays in the community to help our friends and neighbors. Last year, there were a total of 68 whole blood and 25 double red donations given at the Cheboygan Area Public Library. Way to go, donors! It is so greatly appreciated. Did you know that each blood donation could save at least three lives? That means that those donors who have given blood at the Cheboygan Library have taken the opportunity to possibly impact over 270 lives. Let’s keep it up! To sign up to donate blood, feel free to call the library or visit versiti.org and click on the “donate blood” button at the top of the page. Then enter the ZIP code of 49721, check the date range and change it to widen the window of time and hit search. The results may come up below the search boxes, so you may need to scroll down to see them. Click on the “schedule” link next to the library’s listing and follow the sign-in instructions! Thank you in advance for doing this and being a positive impact in your community.

The library’s Teen Take & Read program has begun again. This year’s Take & Read has a theme of “Books & Bites” and will offer a book at the beginning of the month, starting in January, and a fun, interactive book club app that will allow teens to share their thoughts and questions about the book throughout the month, plus an in-person meet-up at the end of the month for a bite to eat provided by the library. The in-person book club will take place on the last Thursday of the month, 3:30-5 p.m. January through May (Jan. 26, Feb. 23, March 30, April 27 and May 25).

Any teens that are interested in the club, regardless of whether they read the book or not, are welcome to come to the Bites book chat at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, to just see what it is all about!

January’s Book for the Library’s Teen Take & Read: Books & Bites program is “Five Total Strangers” by Natalie D. Richards and the Bite will be pizza from Little Caesars. Participants will have an opportunity to help choose the other books to read and discuss during the Take & Read program. This program is free to participate in and is open to 8th-12th-graders.
