The American holiday observed on the last Monday in the month of May is Memorial Day. A day designated for Americans to remember the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originating after the Civil War, known first as Decoration Day became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe this important day of reflection and remembrance at local cemeteries where "Taps" can be heard in the distance invoking reflection, silence, goosebumps and tears for some. This is a solemn holiday, one to remember military members who served and who have passed. We are grateful for their sacrifices and service to our country. The Cheboygan Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day.
