What license plate will I receive when my current registration expires? | Ask the RI DMV

Q: My current registration (the sailboat plate) expires in January. What plate will I receive?

— Suzanne B.

A: As I have mentioned before, there was an issue with the sailboat plate design transferring over into our new computer system. Most, if not all, transferred over as the wave design. Little by little we are changing them to be the correct design when we are notified. That is not the case with you. Your plate design does indicate sailboat. So, when you renew, you will be receiving a new registration certificate and new registration expiration stickers in the mail. You can renew your registration through the mail or online (dmv.ri.gov).

All registration certificates and registration renewal forms that have “Plate Design: Wave” are included in the state’s reissuance program. Upon registration renewal, the new ocean plates will be mailed out.All blue wave plates will be replaced during this two-year program from January 2023 through December 2024.

All other plate designs (charity plates) will not be issued the new ocean plate. The ocean plate will be replacing all passenger, commercial, trailer, motorcycle, public service, camper, suburban, jitney, radio operator, farm, taxi, racer tow, and combination plate types that have the blue wave.

FYI: All commercial and combination plate types were renewable in March 2023, so they should not have the blue wave plate on them. They should all be the new ocean plate.

The RI DMV has just added another online service for our residents. It is called “Online DMV Customer Portal.” This new service lets you check your profile and credentials, registration and adjudication information. It is here that you can check your address information, the status of your credential (ID, DL, CDL), the status of your vehicle and registration, and your privileges (DL, CDL, registration). If you get a moment, check it out.
