A new exhibition that showcases artists from the 20th century through today will debut Friday at Sotheby's.

"A Line is a Dot that Went for a Walk," a selling exhibition featuring the work of celebrated artists including Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Jacqueline Humphries and Helen Frankenthaler, runs through March 10 at the auction house's Palm Beach gallery.

Featuring 20 works ranging in price from $30,000 to $2.5 million, the exhibition investigates the capacity of a line to simultaneously transcend the gap between the two- and three-dimensional, Sotheby's said in a release.

Helen Frankenthaler's "Madame Matisse," an acrylic on canvas painting from 1983, will be on display beginning Friday as part of the "A Line is a Dot that Went for a Walk" exhibition at Sotheby's Palm Beach.

The exhibition's title was inspired by artist Paul Klee’s well-known quote: “A line is a dot that went for a walk,” which metaphorically illustrates the dynamic nature of the line’s role as a guide for the human eye within space, across surfaces and through forms, the gallery said.

"Sotheby’s is honored to present 'A Line is a Dot that Went for a Walk'in Palm Beach through the gallery’s curated exhibition program," said Vera Alemani, Sotheby’s vice president, director of private sales, contemporary art. "Showcasing exemplary works by contemporary artists who have made significant contributions to both the history and discourse of art, this exhibition is designed and dedicated to the Palm Beach public and its growing community of art enthusiasts."

Alexander Calder's "Saché to Kathé," created from sheet metal, brass, wire and paint in 1961, will be on display at Sotheby's beginning Friday.
