NEWARK – More than 400 scholarships are available for area students for assistance during the 2024-25 academic year through the Licking County Foundation.

The Foundation’s 2024 Scholarship Program is now accepting applications from area high school seniors, college students, adults starting or returning to school and students attending graduate or professional school. The online-only application will close at 5 p.m. Jan. 31.

Access to the scholarship applications, along with information about the program and FAQs, is available on the Foundation’s website at thelcfoundation.org.

The minimum scholarship offered is $1,000, with many higher. Donors have established more than 100 scholarship funds since 1964. The first scholarship of $1,000 was awarded in 1968.

According to a Foundation news release, several new scholarship funds will make additional opportunities available in 2024 thanks to local donors. Those include:

  • The Adah Grace Krokonko “Spirit of Life” Scholarship Fund, established in memory of Adah Krokonko by her family to support Licking Valley seniors.

  • The Robert J. and Ellamae (Van Wey) Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund, assisting graduates of Utica High School or Newark High School pursuing careers in education, agriculture, or family and consumer sciences.

  • The Lindsey-Tallman Scholarship Fund, helping women graduating from Licking County high schools.

  • The Rob and Beth Ann Young Scholarship for Licking County residents furthering their education.

“Each year, our scholarship program supports hundreds of students at every stage of their education, and it’s all because of our donors,” Licking County Foundation President Mike Schmidt said in the news release.

“Our scholarship donors come from all walks of life but have one thing in common: they are passionate about increasing access to education, and they understand that the future of our community depends on a well-educated workforce. It’s truly an honor to help them provide support that changes lives,” Schmidt said.

Eligibility requirements vary by scholarship and include factors such as academic merit, financial need, nonacademic activities and the institution or program a student plans to attend. Scholarships are available for two- and four-year degrees, certification programs, graduate programs and professional degrees.

The minimum cumulative GPA required for most is 2.0, with some lower or higher. While most scholarships are for Licking County high school graduates and/or residents, a few are available to residents of neighboring counties.

The U.S. Department of Education is releasing updates to its Free Application for Federal Student Aid program at www.studentaid.gov.

Due to these changes, students completing the Licking County Foundation’s online scholarship application will be permitted to report their FAFSA Student Aid Index at a later date if they do not have it by the Foundation’s application deadline of Jan. 31 and will be notified of the Foundation’s FAFSA extension deadline in coming weeks.
