Licking County Foundation offers students more than 80 scholarships
NEWARK ― The Licking County Foundation is still accepting applications from area students seeking scholarship assistance for the 2023-2024 academic year.
The online application will match eligible students with more than 80 scholarship opportunities that will make about 350 offers of assistance for educational expenses of area high school seniors, current college students, adults starting or returning to school, and students attending graduate or professional school. The program closes at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23.
Applications must be submitted online. Access to the online scholarship application, along with program nformation and guidelines, is available on the Foundation’s website, https://www.thelcfoundation.org/scholarships/. Scholarship amounts range from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on the opportunity. Students must attend accredited institutions in the United States and may be pursuing degrees or certificates at trade schools, traditional or technical colleges or universities. Scholarships include support for professional and graduate studies.
While most scholarships are for Licking County high school graduates and/or residents, a few are available to applicants from neighboring counties. Applicant qualifications vary by scholarship and include factors such as academic merit, financial need, non-academic activities, and the college a student plans to attend. For most, the minimum GPA is 2.0, with some higher.
Scholarships support study across a wide range of fields, from agriculture, nursing, or business to education, the arts, engineering, history, math, natural sciences, skilled trades, medicine, and more. Several scholarships also exist for students who have not decided what they will study.
New scholarshipsSeveral new scholarship opportunities will be available in 2023 thanks to local donors, including:
∎ The Buddy Callicoat Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by friends and family in memory of former Watkins teacher Edward “Buddy” Callicoat, for graduates of Watkins High School intending to study education, ecology, or environmental science.
∎ The Coach Hardin/Coach Klontz Bulldogs Forever Scholarship, established by classmates, friends and alumni of Heath athletics in honor of Coach Don Hardin and Coach Dave Klontz, for graduating Heath High School athletes.
∎ The Richard and Sally Uhde STEM Scholarship, established by the couple for college students attending The Ohio State University or Marietta College who have a declared major in a STEM field.
∎ The Anne Owens Seidel Scholarship, for graduating Granville High School seniors who participated in one of the school’s music programs and planning to major in a music-related field.
∎ The Walter Seidel Scholarship, for Newark High School seniors majoring in engineering.
∎ A one-time scholarship award, the C. Vernon Johnston Scholarship, established by the former Jacksonstown Alumni Association in honor of Johnston, a retired engineer who devoted 15 years to mentoring Lakewood Middle School students through the International Future Cities STEM program.
Although the number of funds that offer scholarships varies year to year, donors have established more than 100 scholarship funds since 1966. The first scholarship of $1,000 was awarded in 1968.
"Our generous scholarship donors have been changing lives since 1968. The Licking County Foundation has awarded thousands of scholarships to area students who want to continue their educations and pursue their dreams for successful careers and lives,” Foundation director Connie Hawk said in a press release. "We hear from hundreds of students about the impact these scholarships have made, all thanks to hundreds of generous donors who are passionate about learning and understand that the future of our community depends on a well-educated workforce."
