Licking County Shrine Tournament's Final 4, Elite 8 on tap for busy weekend
NEWARK — Mound City Little League Park will be bustling this weekend, with plenty at stake.
The 77th Licking County Shrine Tournament's quarterfinals and semifinals will be played, with eight games scheduled for Saturday and four more on Sunday.
Varsity Division play at 1 p.m. on Saturday features Mound City Wright Brothers against Heath Vaughn's Barber Shop on Diamond 1, while a pair of North Newark teams clash on Diamond 4 (Mattingly Landscape and MedBen). At 3:30 Saturday in Varsity quarterfinals, it's Lakewood Clay's Cafe versus North Newark Licking Memorial Hospital on Diamond 1, while Heath Central Ohio Garage Door takes on North Newark Edward Jones on Diamond 4.
The four winners return at 1 p.m. Sunday for the Varsity semifinals. The Varsity third-place game and championship will be played at 5:30 and 8 p.m. on Thursday. A new champion is assured as Heath Moundbuilders Motor Group is not in the field.
In the Farm Division quarterfinals at 1 p.m. on Saturday, North Newark Rooster's tangles with Heath Texas Roadhouse on Diamond 2, with North Newark's MedBen and Claggett Landscape colliding on Diamond 3. The 3:30 games feature Licking Valley Wright Brothers against North Newark Dor-Mar on Diamond 2, and defending champion Licking County Memorial Hospital against league foe Park National Bank on Diamond 3.
Saturday's survivors return at 1 p.m. Sunday for the Farm semifinals. The Farm third-place game and title contest will be at 5:30 and 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Last Sunday's games featured a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts by Heath Central Ohio Garage Door's Cooper Matheny in the Varsity win against league rival Mills Insurance.
In other Varsity Sunday results, Lakewood Clay's Cafe ousted Heath Rolls By the Pound, North Newark LMH beat Heath MPW and North Newark Edward Jones eliminated Licking Valley LMH.
Saturday's Varsity action saw Mound City Wright Brothers defeat North Newark Claggett Landscape, Heath Vaughn's Barber Shop took out Licking Valley Rhino Builders, North Newark Mattingly Landscape stopped Southwest Licking Front Porch Custom Builders, and North Newark MedBen beat Mound City PNB.
In Sunday Farm Division play, Licking Valley Wright Brothers kayoed Mound City Weekley Electric, North Newark Dor-Mar defeated league foe Edward Jones, North Newark LMH ousted Heath Ace Hardware and North Newark PNB took care of Heath Dor-Mar.
Saturday's Farm action had North Newark Rooster's over Lakewood PNB, Heath Texas Roadhouse stopped Licking Valley PNB, North Newark MedBen eliminated league rival Mattingly Landscape, and North Newark Claggett Landscape defeated Heath Kinnard's.
