Crestview, Wooster latest Academic Challenge winners

The sixth through eighth grade Academic Challenge teams wrapped up their season this month at Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center. Students competed as teams, answering questions about a wide range of topics including literature, fine arts, geography, history, math and science.

On May 10, 20 teams participated in the sixth grade Academic Challenge meet. Crestview Team A emerged the winner with members Carter Blum, Titus Kelley and Zoe Kuhn. Colonel Crawford Team A made up of Grady Riggle, Seamus Comerford, Kyle Smith and Isaac Stirm was the runner-up.

On May 11, 35 teams participated in the seventh/eighth grade Academic Challenge. Wooster Team A won the meet. Madison Team A of Chris Lucas, Cameron Porter, Bryce Tudor came in second.

Galion City Schools hire alum for vital district leadership position

GALION — The Galion City Schools announced alumnus Brian Owens will join the district as its new Buildings, Grounds and Transportation director for the 2022-2023 school year.

Owens, a 1993 Galion graduate, served in various positions as an airman with the 179th Airlift Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard for more than 20 years. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Owens and his wife, Angie, also a member of the GHS class of 1993, raised their children in Galion. Brevin graduated as a member of the class of 2017, and Drew as a member of the Class of 2020.

Area Agency on Aging 2022 scholarship program award recipients announced

ONTARIO — The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. has selected the 2022 Scholarship Program award recipients. Scholarships are made possible by the annual meeting sponsorships.

Elizabeth Dvorak, of Huron County, attends the University of Akron and is pursuing a degree in biomedical science. As a full-time student, she also works as an STNA and will be attending Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school. Dvorak is the recipient of the $2,000 scholarship award.

Alexa Konkle, a resident of Wyandot County, is enrolled at North Central State College and is pursuing an associate degree in respiratory therapy. Her goal is to help patients with chronic diseases live a healthy and fulfilling life. Konkle is a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship award.

Emma Golling, of Seneca County, is a nursing student at Marion Technical College and plans to pursue her BSN. Her passion for helping older individuals stems from observing her mother working and making a difference as a physical therapy assistant in a nursing home. Golling is a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship award.

The Area Agency on Aging Corporate Board of Trustees elected to provide one $2,000 scholarship for an individual enrolled in a course of study that benefits the aging network at a four-year university, one $1,000 award to an individual who is enrolled in courses benefitting the aging network at a technical or a two-year college, and one $1,000 award to an individual who is attending any higher institute of learning or certification that may benefit the aging network.

Cattlemen youth awarded at BEST banquet for a successful season

MARYSVILLE — The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s (OCA) Beef Exhibitor Show Total (BEST) program wrapped up the 2021-2022 BEST season on May 7 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. Over 800 BEST exhibitors and families gathered to watch youth receive awards for their show success, cattle industry knowledge, photography skills, community service efforts and more.

This year’s BEST program featured seven weekends of sanctioned shows that wove their way across the state. It was the biggest season yet with over 676 youth participants showing around 1,030 head of market animals and heifers throughout the season.

The banquet kicked off with the annual Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) donation. BEST exhibitors raised money earlier in the year through the Celebrity Showdown and collected pop tabs all year. Over 710 pounds of pop tabs were accumulated and this year’s donation total was $22,948.

The main event of the evening was the award recognition ceremony for the hard work exhibitors showcased throughout the season. Two Richland County residents were recognized. Trenton Braska was honored for the Champion Charolais Steer and Champion Novice Market Animal (Charolais). Payton Stover was awarded the 8th Overall Crossbred Heifer.

Summer registration is open at Richland Academy

Registration is now open for summer classes at Richland Academy of the Arts. New and returning classes are being offered this summer in dance, music, visual art, theatre and martial arts for students aged 3-60+. The summer semester begins June 6.
