New book nook at the Salvation Army
A book nook has been unveiled to become a place for children to cozy up to a good book at the Dewald Community Center of The Salvation Army.
A handcrafted, solid oak book nook was dedicated to the memory of Mansfield resident Randy Moritz, a valued member of Altrusa.
Altrusa is an international nonprofit organization making the Mansfield community better through service, literacy, fundraising and international projects each year.
Moritz spent countless hours at the Dewald Center sharing her passion for literacy and love of books. She passed away in 2021.
The handmade reading bench started with an idea between Altrusa and the Dewald Center staff. That idea was presented to Jeremiah Howe, career tech supervisor at Pioneer Career and Technology Center, and with a combination of departments, students created the bench.
The literacy-based Dewald Community Center at 47 S. Main St., Mansfield, serves second through sixth grade students with Learning Zone, after-school homework help and enrichment, and Summer Zone, a six-week summer day camp.
Community support sought to double donation
Mansfield’s Visual Bucket List Foundation (VBLF) has been awarded a $5,000 donation from Hamilton Insurance Group, and it has a chance to double it with help from the local community. With a simple comment or share on social media, the VBLF can achieve a $10,000 donation that will allow the foundation to provide a bucket list wish to a child losing their vision.
Starting Monday, the story of Hamilton Insurance Group and VBLF will be spotlighted on the official Make More Happen microsite at agentgiving.com/Hamilton-Insurance-Group where supporters can vote to help the team reach their donation goal. If the featured story receives at least 500 votes — shares to social media and comments on their story — the donation will be increased to $10,000.
Ontario concerts in Marshall Park underway
A series of concerts are planned in Marshall park through September. All concerts are 6 to 8 p.m. and admission is free.

Madison Class of '02 reunion set for July 30

Area Agency on Aging announces scholarship recipients
The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. has selected the 2022 Scholarship Program award recipients. Scholarships are made possible by the annual meeting sponsorships.
Elizabeth Dvorak, of Huron County, currently attends the University of Akron and is pursuing a degree in biomedical science. As a full-time student, she also works as an STNA and will be attending Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school. Dvorak is the recipient of the $2,000 scholarship award.
Alexa Konkle, a resident of Wyandot County, is currently enrolled at North Central State College and is pursuing an associate degree in respiratory therapy. Konkle is a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship award.
Emma Golling, of Seneca County, is a nursing student at Marion Technical College and plans to pursue her BSN. Golling is a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship award.
The three recipients will be presented their awards during the July meeting of the Area Agency on Aging Board of Trustees.
Ashland resident wins Ohio State Parks photo contest
COLUMBUS — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is proud to announce the winners of its 2022 Ohio State Parks Photo Contest. All winning entries, except the People’s Choice award, were chosen over three rounds of judging by a panel of ODNR employees. The People’s Choice Award was voted on by the public.
ODNR’s photo contest offered five categories for images taken in an Ohio state park after Jan. 1, 2022: wildlife in action, recreation in the parks, wondrous water, novice naturalist, and explore trails. Participants were able to submit up to five entries per category.
The first-place winner, Ashley Hendershot of Ashland, submitted “Mohican Sunshine.” Her image depicts a biker on the 25-mile mountain bike loop at Mohican State Park with their hands up in the air while sun bursts through the surrounding trees.
The contest was co-sponsored by US eDirect, ODNR’s reservation management provider. The grand prize was a collapsible Oru kayak and a $120 Ohio State Parks gift certificate.
Seminary to present 'Archaeology Through the Eyes of a Potter' 6
ASHLAND — “Archaeology Through the Eyes of a Potter,” an interactive lecture and pottery demonstration by Julie Ward, will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on June 26 at the Ashland Theological Seminary, 910 Center St. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Ashland University Department of History and Political Science.
Ward, the owner of Brinker Street Pottery, will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the rich trove of Biblical era ceramic archaeological artifacts housed in the Flora Archaeological Collection at the Ashland Theological Seminary. Artifacts range from a child’s tiny cup to 30-liter storage amphorae, dating as early as 4000 B.C.
