Lauren Mellot recognized by the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation

COLUMBUS — Lauren Mellot of Richland County is the recipient of several Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation scholarships.

Mellot was awarded the Cindy Hollingshead Scholarship which goes to students who are pursuing careers focused on agriculture, community service and association leadership. She was also awarded the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation Scholar Award which recognizes students for academic effort, community service and career interests that use agriculture to enhance the partnership between producers and consumers in rural, suburban and/or urban settings.

In addition, Mellott received the Women’s Leadership in Agriculture Scholarship designed for students who have chosen a career path that benefits agricultural or community development such as food production, scientific research, education/outreach or leadership development.

Finally, she was one of two recipients of the Yvonne Lesicko Memorial Scholarship. The income from this endowment provides scholarship assistance in perpetuity to students majoring in agricultural and environmental policy or agriculture-related fields, such as food production, scientific research, education/outreach, policymaking, advocacy, or leadership development for women.

In all the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation awarded nearly $85,000 in scholarships to students across the state, the highest amount given in a single year.

Local students gradate from Ohio Dominican

COLUMBUS — Two Richland County residents were among 189 Ohio Dominican University students who earned degrees following the spring 2022 semester. Members of ODU's spring 2022 graduating class include Cheyenne Hunt of Mansfield, Master of Arts in English; and Thomas Staab of Bellville, BS in Exercise Science.

Golf for Kids' Sake set for July 29

Mid-Ohio Youth Mentoring's 24th annual Golf for Kids' Sake outing will take place July 29 at Oak Tree Golf Club, 1440 Old Oak Trail. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is $320 for a team or $80 per individual golfer. There are sponsorship opportunities ranging from $50-$2,000 or more. The catered lunch will be a Southern BBQ and is available to non-golfers for $40.

The deadline to register is July 26.

Autism Awareness Walk-A-Thon to hold fundraiser

The Autism Awareness Walk-A-Thon is having a garage sale June 4 and is asking the community for donations of items, except clothing or stuffed animals.

The garage sale will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 4 at the United Steelworkers Union Hall, 376 W. Longview Ave., Mansfield.

Registration underway for Walk to End Alzheimer’s

TOLEDO — The Alzheimer’s Association Northwest Ohio Chapter's 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held at the North Central Ohio/Mansfield on Sept. 17. Tiffin will host a walk Sept. 24.

Throughout the Northeast Ohio service area, thousands in the community walk in memory of mothers, fathers, grandparents and loved ones who are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., more than breast and prostate cancers combined.

Loudonville museum introduces history camp for middle school students

LOUDONVILLE — The Cleo Redd Fisher Museum in Loudonville has a new summer program known as History Camp. Open to students ages 10-13, the camp is designed to stimulate children’s creativity and allow them to experience history, architecture, art, crafts and games of diverse cultures while highlighting those of the area.

Campers will tour historic buildings and natural landscapes to introduce them to the history and activities that make the Mohican area unique. They’ll also get a chance to try their hand at numerous skills from the past, ranging from fire starting to archery to cooking with cast iron.

The camp is led by Loudonville High School teacher and museum vice president Aimee Ross who will be assisted by a team of two assistant educators. It's slated for June 13-17, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day.

Although there is a cost to register; full-ride scholarships are available for any families in need. Included in registration, each camper will receive a T-shirt, backpack, water bottle and other supplies as well as sack lunches. Interested families can learn more by visiting the museum’s website, crfmuseum.com and selecting History Camp! in the event listings. Registration is open but space is limited.

Local PERI chapter to meet

The local chapter of the Public Employees Retirees, Incorporated (PERI) will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Golden Corral, 575 Lexington-Springmill Road, Ontario. The speaker will be Nicole Williams from the Area Agency on Aging.
