MANCI salutes its Employee of the Year

Mansfield Correctional Institution announced that Correctional Program Specialist Katelyn Bundschuh is the Employee of the Year.

Bundschuh is a graduate of Bowling Green State University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in May of 2013. She began her career with Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections in November of 2013.

She is an active member of the employee activity committee and women in corrections committee. Bundschuh also assists in coordinating holistic family engagements for the incarcerated adult population at the Mansfield Correctional Camp. She has also taken a lead role in implementing the Imagination Library in the visiting rooms at both Mansfield Correctional and Mansfield Correctional Camp.

Shelby Foundation awards scholarships to graduating seniors

SHELBY — The Shelby Foundation recently awarded more than $96,000 in scholarships to Shelby district graduates.

Scholarship recipients are determined by selection committees. Each scholarship has its own criteria for candidate selection with most based on academic merit, financial need, community involvement, career choice and extracurricular activities. The high school’s guidance office manages the scholarship application and recipient selection process. No Shelby Foundation board or staff member serve on a selection committee.

This year’s scholarships and its recipients are: Eric T. Ontario High School Performing Arts Department holds first-ever Signing Day

ONTARIO — The Performing Arts Department of Ontario High School, with the support of the Ontario Music Boosters, celebrated its first Signing Day on May 15. Four Seniors have auditioned, been accepted and signed committals to perform at their prospective colleges.

Lance Miller is attending Ashland University as an Ashbrook Scholar and will be playing bass trombone in the Eagle marching band this fall. He will also participate in AU’s concert band and plans to join Jazz or Brass ensembles in the future.

Payton Schisler, a five-year Ontario Marching Band member, joining the H.S. program as an eighth grader will also be joining the Ashland University marching band and Symphonic Band.

Elizabeth Corn has been a part of the marching, jazz and symphonic band for all four years of her high school career. In the fall, Corn will be attending Capital University to pursue an undergraduate degree in clarinet performance with a possible double major in music technology. Her long-term goal is to become a professional clarinetist and either work full-time performing and teaching or take on a career in audio tech.

Kaylen Huvler, the only student of the four who has been a part of vocal and instrumental ensembles will be attending The Ohio State University this fall majoring in music education with a choral specialization at part of the Arts Scholars Program.

College news and notes

● Capital University — The following Richland County students have been awarded the Main Street Scholarship, a minimum $20,000 annual award: Alexander Heichel of Lexington; Baden Forup of Mansfield; Case Mongold of Shelby; Elizabeth Corn of Ontario; Jayden Dechert of Mansfield; Liam Paxton of Mansfield; and Paityn Hall of Mansfield.

● Ohio Wesleyan — Clay Sturts of Mansfield earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Sturts majored in psychology and zoology.

● Minnesota State Mankato — Jacob Demers of Shelby has been awarded a Master of Fine Arts/creative writing.

● Bluffton University — Sydney Cavanaugh of Mansfield is participating in a cross-cultural experience in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic during the month of May. Cavanaugh, along with other Bluffton students, will trace the geography and history of national socialism and the Holocaust.

Richland County 4-H holds public speaking contest

The Richland County 4-H program held its spring public speaking contest at the Richland County Longview Center on May 11. The results were:

  • Winners of the 4-H Pledge: 1st - Emmalyn Kleman (Shelby), 2nd – Mary Thompson (Shelby), 3rd – Mariah Barciz (Mansfield)

  • Winner of the 4-H Creed: 1st – Marissa Barciz (Mansfield)

  • Winner of the 4-H Prepared Speaking: 1st – Elizabeth Enix (Mansfield); 2nd –– Sofia Johnson (Mansfield).

  • Winner of the Intermediate Demonstration Contest: 1st - Sawyer Eshelman (Shelby). Sawyer will be invited to participate at the Ohio State Fair in August.

  • Outstanding Speaker Award (special judges award) for the overall contest included: Emmalyn Kleman, Mary Thompson, Marissa Barciz, Sawyer Eshelman

  • Judges for the 4-H event included Mary K Steele, Diane Larrick, Karen Reith and Brenda Dininger

Major donors for this public speaking contests were Greenslade Family, Charles Miller & Associates, Auctioneers, Abbott Family, Beverage Family, Richland County Youth Safety Council and New Edition 4-H Club

Public speaking skills are one of the important abilities 4-H members learn through study and practice in the Richland County 4-H program. Many current 4-H club members go beyond the club level and participate in Richland County’s spring public speaking contest. In addition, some youth will be invited to participate at a state level competition.
