Pioneer announces award and scholarship winners

SHELBY — Pioneer Career and Technology Center held its annual Pioneer Honors Night on April 27 when students were recognized for achieving, performing and succeeding at extraordinary levels.

Scholarships were awarded to many students for continuing education with the total amount over $1.7 million. Pioneer also announced special awards, including the Director’s Attitude Awards and Citizenship Awards.

A major highlight was the announcement of Ken Chang, a senior from Ontario High School, as the 2022 Byron H. Carmean Character, Dedication and Service Award winner. Chang has excelled in Pioneer’s exercise science/sports medicine program. The Carmean Award is the highest award given to a Pioneer student and was created to recognize students with outstanding qualities of character, personal dedication and service to education.

In addition to Chang’s classroom success including earning 26 college credits, he is active at Pioneer, Ontario High School and as a community volunteer. At Pioneer Chang has been involved with the HOSA (Future Health Professionals) and National Technical Honors Society. At Ontario, Chang has earned the Scholar-Athlete Award all four years and participated in varsity track, varsity cross country and is a member of National Honors Society. Chang’s volunteer endeavors include the Tiny Tim Shoppe, Avita Summit Therapy and Mosiac Meals Organization.

Other nominees for the Carmean Award were: Zavier Alterio, Lexington High School; Ryan Chapman, Ontario High School; Drew Ericsson, homeschooled; Graham Geissman, Buckeye Central High School; Wyatt Martin, Buckeye Central High School; Isaac Neff, Lucas High School; Kolin Rowlinson, Buckeye Central High School; Allexis Thompson, Shelby High School; and Kamdyn Vanderpool, Buckeye Central High School.

Richland County 4-H selects top public speakers

The Richland County 4-H program held its spring public speaking contest at the Richland County Longview Center on April 26. The winners were:

  • 4-H Pledge: 1st - Marissa Barciz (Mansfield), 2nd - Emma Kleman (Shelby), 3rd - Bryson Bays (Ashland).

  • 4-H Prepared Speaking: 1st - Kaley Bowman (Mansfield); 2nd - Maylanna Gamble (Mansfield); 3rd - Sofia Johnson (Mansfield).

  • Intermediate Demonstration Contest: Sawyer Eshelman (Shelby). Sawyer will be invited to participate at the Ohio State Fair in August.

  • Outstanding Speaker Award (special judges award) for the overall contest included: Natalie Adkins, Bryson Bays, Emma Kleman and Marissa Barciz

Judges were Mary K Steele, Diane Larrick, Robert Rhea and Gloria Franklin.

Major donors were the Greenslade Family, Charles Miller & Associates, Auctioneers, Abbott Family — Ian, Faith, Carson & Emily Eidt, the Beverage Family and Chad Kirkpatrick/Amy Secor.

Public speaking skills are one of the important abilities 4-H members learn through study and practice in the Richland County 4-H program. Many current 4-H club members go beyond the club level and participate in Richland County’s spring public speaking contest. In addition, some youth will be invited to participate at a state level competition.

North Central State College students named to All-Ohio Academic Team

COLUMBUS – More than 60 students from Ohio’s 23 community colleges were honored Wednesday for their excellence in academics, leadership and community service as part of the 2021 All-Ohio Academic Team. The event was held as part of celebrations of Community College Month in Ohio.

The All-Ohio Academic Team program is a collaboration between the OACC, Phi Theta Kappa national honor society and Honda, the event sponsor.

Making the first team from North Central State College is Makayla Stormer while Cade Mickley made the third team.

The top-performing students were nominated by college faculty, staff and leaders. Students recognized as first-team honorees will receive $500 scholarships, while second-team members earn $250 scholarships to assist students transferring on to universities to complete their bachelor’s degree requirements. The All-Ohio Academic Team also includes high-achieving students who are planning to move directly into the workforce will also be recognized and receive awards.

Local students honored by Capital University

BEXLEY — Capital University honored nearly 70 students for excellence in academic achievement, service, and leadership in April. The awards were given at the annual Honors Convocation.

Heba Fathala of Ontario received the Faculty Leadership Award for Outstanding Senior Students recognizing leadership and academic achievement and the Sociology and Criminology Department Distinguished Senior Student Award.

Olivia Fisher of Shelby received the Hammarskjold International Studies Award in recognition of academic excellence and service on behalf of international understanding.
