As much as we love exploring new cities and countries, the one thing that nearly every traveller positively detests (apart from the finance bit of course) is being stuck on a long haul flight! The random strangers, uncomfortable seats and minimal movement space - not all of us are lucky enough to travel in the plush business class!

Sometimes, you may feel like putting off visiting a truly beautiful far-away land because you can’t handle being stuck on a flight for so long! Yup, trust me - we have all been there.

Whilst I agree there is really no way you can avoid getting bored on a long haul flight, the below hacks can help you delay boredom for a major part of the journey, or if you end up doing all of them, the whole time:

Read a book

Being one of my favourite pastimes as well, I place this activity right on top of the list. If you are a fan of reading – a proverbial bookworm, then being in a flight with absolutely no distractions provides a pretty perfect nest to devour the latest crime thriller or well, a rom-com!

Snooze a little

While airplanes cannot do anything (yet) about the whole non availability of network on your phone, how about using this time to catch up on some much needed beauty sleep?

A well rested you means waking up feeling refreshed and also doubles up as a ‘ready to take on the world’ appearance once you alight. From the airport direct to exploring the streets, like a true global wanderer

Strike up a conversation

Provided the person sitting next to you isn’t a creep (those internal radar systems work overtime in deducing this ladies!), there is no reason why you shouldn’t strike up a conversation with them. They sure cannot be BFF material in such a short span but they can be a much needed distraction swapping fun travel stories.

Keep up with your work

This isn’t something I’d normally advice, but hey, for all those busy busy people out there, flight time can actually be used to: finish up drafting that final email, writing up that final document and loads of little stuff before your holiday so your vacation time is actually spent in peace. God knows we all deserve a nice vacation undisturbed by our managers!

Catch up on some TV

All long haul flights have great in flight entertainment programmes including movies and TV shows keeping us easily occupied for hours at a stretch.

Bored of this? Then switch to some radio, news or music! One of the great things about modern day flights is how far technology has advanced in making our lives comfortable.

Use the (not so) free internet

I know it costs an arm and a leg to buy wifi packs in flight, but if there’s nothing else to do then why not? Or you could use the free data that flights provide until it becomes not so free anymore.
