Lori Vallow Daybell sentenced to life in prison

An Idaho mother convicted of the gruesome killings of her two youngest children and her husband's former wife was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the maximum sentence possible. Lori Vallow Daybell was sentenced more than three years after the bodies of her son, Joshua "JJ" Vallow, 7, and daughter Tylee Ryan, 16, were discovered in her husband's backyard in rural Idaho. She was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the two first-degree murder charges and conspiracy to commit murder of her husband's former wife, Tammy Daybell. The three sentences are to be served consecutively because Vallow Daybell "needs to be held accountable separately for each of the three murders," Judge Steven Boyce said. Paul Reubens, aka Pee-wee Herman, dies at 70

Actor Paul Reubens – or, you might better know him as Pee-wee Herman – has died at 70 after a private battle with cancer. Reubens' estate confirmed news of his death on his official Instagram page Monday, including a quote from Reubens himself apologizing to fans for dealing with his health privately. His comedic man-child character Pee-wee Herman was featured in the 1985 film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and a Saturday morning children's show on CBS, "Pee-wee's Playhouse." Reubens’ life and career was not without controversy: In 1991, he was charged with public masturbation, and in 2001, he was charged with possessing child pornography.

Children are dying in boating accidents across the US

A 6-year-old girl died Friday in Arizona after she was accidentally struck by a boat her mother was operating, a tragedy highlighting how summer fun can too often turn deadly for kids and others. In 2022, the U.S. Coast Guard reported 4,040 recreational boating accidents involving 636 deaths and 2,222 injuries. Of those, 54 of the dead and 459 of the injured were ages 19 and under. Though inattention and inexperience often contribute to boat accidents, experts say, there's another simple safety measure that's often overlooked: Studies show fewer than 8% of boaters who are not required to wear a life jacket wear one, according to Coast Guard recreational boating safety program manager Paul Barnard. Here's what to know + ways to stay safe.

Russia savages Zelenskyy's hometown after Moscow threat

Rescue workers were searching for survivors Monday after Russian missiles slammed into the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, killing at least six people and injuring dozens more in the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, authorities said. The attack came a day after three Ukrainian drones damaged buildings in Moscow, prompting Zelenskyy to say it was "inevitable, natural and absolutely fair" to bring the war to Russian territory. "The murdering country will be held accountable before the court for what it has done. We will not forgive," said Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets. Tuesday was declared a day of mourning for the city. Here's the latest coverage.
