Lifeguard service extended on Hatteras Island as crowds continue

Outer Banks lifeguards are putting in overtime this year as beach crowds are staying past Labor Day, the traditional end of the busy season.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore will extend its lifeguard services in Frisco, Ocracoke and Coquina Beach to the end of September, said park spokesman Mike Barber. Towns from Corolla to Nags Head also plan to continue manning lifeguard stands through at least the end of the month.

The decision to prolong ocean rescue services came after it became clear the crowds weren’t subsiding. Home schooling and searing desires to get out of the house amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic seem to be extending this year’s beach season.

Outer Banks beach rentals are fully booked through September and beyond, said Mirek Dabrowski, president of Outer Banks Lifesaving Services and who contracts ocean rescue staff for Duck, Southern Shores and Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
