Lubbock community members gathered Saturday for a Youth Night as an early celebration of Martin Luther King Day on Monday.

The youth night, hosted by the Martin Luther King Commemorative Council of Lubbock at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, featured the MLK Youth Mass Choir, which performed various songs to make the night memorable.

The audience was engaged, cheering and singing along with the performances assembled by schoolchildren of various age groups from our community.

Tracey Snell-Jackson, president of the Martin Luther King Commemorative Council of Lubbock, said the children came together for only four days of rehearsals, but they put on a wonderful show.

“I just think that they're wonderful and sincere because, if they had not been sincere, they couldn’t have learned the material and couldn't have delivered it the way they did,” Snell-Jackson said.

The youth received words of encouragement from City Councilwoman Shelia Patterson Harris during the event.

Patterson Harris said she was very excited to be a part of the event because, year after year, events like these remind us that we have not forgotten who came before us and the sacrifices they made.

“We're reminded of the fact that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead the march against discrimination and violations of civil rights,” Patterson Harris said. “I would ask that we're reminded this evening and every day, each one of us, to continue to take the stance against the very same thing.”
