Two airlifted to hospital after light aircraft crashes near Prestwick Airport

Two people have been airlifted to hospital after a light aircraft crashed in Monkton near Prestwick Airport.

Police Scotland said the crash happened at about 16:10 on Tuesday. A number of emergency vehicles attended.

The two people from the aircraft were flown to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow by the Coastguard helicopter.

The plane is understood to have crashed on private land. The A719 has been closed near the B739.

Police have asked drivers to avoid the area.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said "Around 4.10pm on Tues 23rd April 24, we received a report that a small aircraft with two people on board had crashed in Monkton."

A statement from HM Coastguard said: "The Coastguard helicopter was requested to attend a site close to Prestwick Airport earlier today following an incident and airlifted two people to QE Hospital."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service confirmed that two appliances and heavy rescue equipment were at the scene.
