All the Light We Cannot See has just arrived on Netflix – and the TV show's director and co-executive producer Shawn Levy has praised Mark Ruffalo's performance and Hugh Laurie has hit the streaming platform.

Adapted from Anthony Doerr's bestselling novel of the same name, the four-part series follows a blind teenager named Marie (Aria Mia Loberti) and a young German soldier named Werner (Louis Hofmann) in Nazi-occupied France when their paths inexplicably cross.

The Avengers star Ruffalo appears in the emotional drama as Marie's father Daniel LeBlanc. Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Levy hailed the actor's "soulful warmth" with his on-screen daughter, as well as Steven Knight's screenplay.

"Well, a lot of it was in the script. I have to say, it was Steve's writing of the father/daughter storyline that was a primary driver of my decision to direct all the episodes myself," said Levy.

"And I know that, between us, we have like 11 children – not together, separately. But fatherhood informs our lives a lot."

"Look, so much of it was in Steven’s writing, but then I cast Mark Ruffalo precisely because, in addition to his talent, he has a soulful warmth," he continued.

"I knew that it would add this unspoken intimacy between Daniel and Marie that would take that father/daughter relationship, and put it on another level."

The logline for the show reads: "Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner over the course of a decade, All The Light We Cannot See tells a story of the extraordinary power of human connection – a beacon of light that can lead us through even the darkest of times."
