After being healed of leprosy by Christ Jesus, a Samaritan, who was among nine others healed, then “… with a loud voice glorified God … giving him thanks…” (Luke 17:15,16).

Christ Jesus said, “Were there not 10 cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.” (Luke 17:17,18)

The belief that gratitude is not often expressed appears to exist even today, but it doesn’t need to. And, as individuals we can cut into this lack of expression.

Every time we express our appreciation to others orally, or in writing, we are probably adding a little brightness to their day. I have often heard it said after hearing or reading an expression of gratitude, “You have made my day!”

One of my writing assignments in my college English classes over many years was for the students to write a letter of gratitude to someone with whom they have not visited, written or spoken to for at least three years. Many of the responses to the students have been remarkable with appreciation. Some have referred to their letters as “keepers,” and many have expressed their plan to share their letter with family or members of a team, for example.

Fundraisers who express sincere gratitude with possibly a thoughtful, personal note for a very small donation may be pleasantly surprised to find a larger donation the next time.

Thank-you notes following an interview for employment — written with specific interest and gratitude — may more likely bring these thoughtful candidates to a position with the company. I know from some contact with companies and organizations that applicants who do not write a thank-you note following an interview may not be considered in the employment process.

It’s always a pleasure to see on TV the refreshing tips of the cap or a warm wave to the crowd from, for example, a batter who has just hit a home run. Such gestures usually bring even more warm applause from the fans.

It’s so easy to bring more gratitude into our lives with a kind remark, note or letter. Believe me, it’s a blessing beyond measure in the uplifting feelings it brings to the recipients.
