Lightning Storm Rolls Over Missouri's St. Charles County

Lightning lit up clouds over St Charles County, west of St Louis, Missouri, late on Monday, August 12, as damaging storms rolled through the area.

The storms followed damaging flash-flooding earlier on Monday in nearby areas including Granite City, Illinois, just east of St Louis across the Mississippi River. The National Weather Service said a record daily rainfall may have been set in St Louis that day, beating the previous record set in 1916.

Later, as evening storms rolled in, the weather service warned of lightning and “damaging wind gusts” with speeds of more than 60 mph.
