Lights all aglow: Area communities celebrate the Christmas season

Across the area cities are lighting trees, planning parades and other events to usher in the Christmas season.

Wrens Events

The annual Christmas parade which was originally scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2, was canceled due to inclement weather.

The City of Wrens and Wrens Hometown Partnership have several holiday events planned for this season. The Christmas on Estelle Street event has been rescheduled for Friday, Dec. 8, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will feature engineered snow, vendors, food and entertainment by The Tony Howard Band.

The City of Wrens will host a free Family Movie Night screening of The Grinch at the track Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. Food, beverages, cotton candy and popcorn available for purchase. Come early to set up chairs and bring a blanket. Outside coolers allowed, but no glass or alcohol will be permitted. Meet the Grinch at 4:30 p.m. For more information call 706-547-3000.

Cookies with Mrs. Claus will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. at the city's Civic Room located at 401 E. Broad Street. Cookies and hot chocolate will be provided as Mrs. Claus reads a story to participating children. The event is free and planned for children 12 and under.

Howard Manor preservation will host a Christmas Tour of Home Saturday, Dec. 9. Tickets are $20 (nonrefundable) and the tour includes the Griner Home at 313 Quaker Rd, Howard Manor at 105 North Main St., the Norton Home at 100 Williams St., the Templeton Home at 208 Stone St. and the Wren Home at 207 Stone St. Visit homes in any order. These homes are not handicap accessible. No strollers, video or photography are allowed. No high-heeled shoes and restrooms are only available at Howard Manor.

Louisville  Events

Lighting up the 'Ville Candyland Edition Christmas Festival will be Saturday, Dec. 9, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Helen Clark Memorial Park.

The Louisville Christmas Parade will be also be Saturday, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m. Entry forms available at City Hall and on the city's Facebook page.

A Christmas car show will be held in the park from 1:20 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. as well as an outdoor screening of The Grinch following the parade.

Louisville’s annual Bustlin’ on Broad downtown events opened with a tree lighting ceremony and music by several local church choirs on Thursday, Nov. 30.

Ott Stephens will provide music downtown on Dec. 7, Stephanie’s Dance Explosion will perform on Dec. 14 beginning at 6 p.m. and the Louisville Methodist Church will provide a live nativity on Dec. 21 at 6 p.m.

A Louisville yard decorating contest, Candyland Edition, is open to all residents within the city limits of Louisville. Participation is free and entry forms are available through Dec. 13 at City Hall or by email abroxton@louisvillega.gov. Contest for exterior decorations only and must be located on the street side of the participating property. Judging will take place Dec. 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Judging criteria include use of theme, lights and decor, special effects and overall appearance.

Jefferson County Toy Drive

Would you like to donate new and unwrapped toys or clothes to families in need in Jefferson County? Families in need can apply until Dec. 1. Applications can be picked up or dropped off at any of the toy drop off sites listed here: Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Queensborough National Bank in Wadley, Louisville Fire Department or Thomas Jefferson Academy.
