Lil Nas X has officially "given birth" to his first full-length album, MONTERO, and to say fans are obsessed is an understatement. Of course, they have taken to one of Lil Nas's favorite mediums, Twitter, to share their reactions to MONTERO and its mix of mega hooks and emotional, vulnerable moments. Even the Teletubbies got involved!
The rollout for the entire project was meme-heavy, with Lil Nas trolling Drake and pretending to be pregnant with the album. The memes continued as fans shared their love for the music, with one sharing a screenshot of "Album of the Year" calling them, then posted, "Why’s #MONTERO calling me?"
Lil Nas X himself joined in on the fun, posting praise from public figures like President Barack Obama. Even the Teletubbies wanted a part of the festivities! The official 'Tubbies account posted pics of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa, and Po posing on the MONTERO cover, writing, "Can we get a feature on the next album?" (LOL.) Lil Nas answered, saying, "Alright bet! Me and Tinky Winky on the hook, Dipsy & Po on the verses and we’ll let Laa Laa do the outro."
Others were thrilled to see Lil Nas X being his most authentic self and using his platform to showcase queer Black men, who are often underrepresented in music, and especially in hip hop. "Watching Lil Nas X prominently feature queer Black men as love interests in his music videos and exclusively having queer Black male dancers in his live performances while being one of the biggest names in music and a multi-platinum artist? LOVE TO SEE IT," wrote writer and comedian Rinny Perkins. And Chloe Bailey also commented on the album, writing "I am so damn proud of you. You are the sweetest being and deserve all the good coming to you. Keep shutting sh*t down, congrats on your album!!" along with some funny pics of herself and Nas.
The album rollout may have been heavy on the memes, but it also had a mission. In keeping with the baby theme, Lil Nas set up a "baby registry" of non-profit groups for fans to donate to, including The Bail Project and Compassionate Atlanta. Welcome to the world, baby MONTERO! We're thrilled you're here.
