Lima mayor delivers Pride month proclamation

Jun. 10—LIMA — Lima Mayor David Berger delivered remarks proclaiming the city as a participant in LGBTQ Pride month.

In the United States, Pride month is recognized every June to commemorate the Stonewall uprising of 1969, when the LGBTQ community and allies rose up against police harassment and discrimination in New York City. Now, Pride month serves as a celebration of inclusiveness and recognition for the LGBTQ community.

"It is imperative that all people in our community, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, feel valued, safe, empowered, and supported by their peers and community leaders," Berger said. "[I] encourage residents to recognize the contributions made by the members of the LGBTQ community and to actively promote principles of equality, liberty, and justice."

Chad Stearns, managing partner at Modo Media and Downtown Lima, Inc. board member, was excited to see an official recognition from the mayor.

"It's really important for city government and the mayor to recognize June as Pride month, mostly for advocacy reasons, and making sure that we see the upticks in violence against the trans community and the LGBTQ youth suicide rates uptick," he said. "It's important to see our city leaders and government support because sometimes in our homes we don't have that support."

While Pride is celebrated for the entire month, the culminating Pride celebration, hosted by PFLAG Lima, will be on June 27 at Faurot Park.

Mayor Berger believes that officially declaring June as Pride month in Lima will make the town more inclusive and welcoming to all people.

"It is important to recognize that we must always be vigilant, we must always be working to create a community that is welcoming and that supports people," Berger said. "The proclamation and the community services that are available, I think make it clear that we're working to make that happen."
