Limestone County Schools outlines revisions to redistricting plan

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) —Limestone County Schools has made some revisions to its proposed redistricting plan. These changes come before next month’s meeting where the school board will vote on the proposal.

Nearly a dozen people addressed board members Tuesday evening with concerns about the rezoning plan – asking them to pump the brakes. Before they addressed the board, school officials introduced some changes to the initial proposed plan.

The first big change revolves around Creekside Elementary and Creekside Primary. Currently…both are at capacity or above capacity.

Under the new proposal, students would be phased in and based on current numbers…143 students would be moved from Creekside Elementary and Creekside Primary if the proposal is passed.

Another big change centers around East Limestone High School students.

The old proposal had these students rezoned to Ardmore High School, Tanner High School, and Elkmont High School.

Under the new proposal, all current East Limestone High Students will remain at the high school with some students being transitioned to other schools over time. The district says because its current capital plan has funding for additional classrooms at East Limestone, that will accommodate current and future growth.

Superintendent Dr. Randy Shearouse said it’s part of his responsibility to draw the district lines and work with the school board in doing so. The superintendent says they understand a lot of parents and community members are upset with the proposal, but believes recent revisions may change their minds.

“I think once they have a chance to sit down and really read the PowerPoint we presented tonight…changes to the proposal…I think once they sit down, they’ll see many of their concerns were addressed,” Shearouse said.

Dr. Shearouse says the district will post the PowerPoint presentation with the revisions on its website either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

If the board votes ‘yes’ to the proposal, rezoning for students will take effect at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.

The board will vote on the proposed plan on Tuesday, March 12th.
