Lin-Manuel Miranda surprises Revere theater students rehearsing for ‘In the Heights’ production

Theater students at Revere High School recently received a special shoutout from one of the biggest names on Broadway.

Three-time Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda sent the class a video, wishing them good luck before they begin rehearsals for their production of ‘In the Heights.’

Miranda wrote and starred in the play years before his show ‘Hamilton’ became a pop-culture phenomenon.

Revere’s drama teacher told Boston 25 they choose ‘In the Heights’ for their production because the musical features a Hispanic community in New York and 70 percent of Revere’s student body is Hispanic.

The show will be the first musical production at Revere High School in more than 30 years. Revere’s drama teacher says the drought may have been due to staffing issues or a lack of interest.

“Hey Revere, good morning, break a leg on your show! Congratulations, remember to be a community every second you’re on that stage!,” Miranda said in his video for the students.

“I wasn’t really processing it I was looking at my other lead and was like what’s going on and when he puts the camera up and says ‘Revere’ I immediately lost it,” said Revere senior Nandy Vioson. “I just started crying because it was like a dream come true for like the man, the creator of our show to acknowledge our existence and acknowledge how hard we’ve been working and congratulate us for our show next week.”

Tickets are still available for both shows next Wednesday and Thursday night.
