Lincoln Co. looking for burglary suspect possibly linked to crimes across county

LINCOLN COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has been searching for a man who allegedly attempted to break into a home in rural Lincoln County on Saturday.

Deputies said Billie Dean Roberts tried to break into a home, but was spooked by a dog barking at the home. The homeowner called 911, alerting deputies.

“The individual fled on foot. One of our deputies contacted him for a brief moment before the subject ran away,” said Sgt. Aaron Bennett, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Bennett said the sheriff’s office then activated its special operations team.

“We had assistance from Stroud Police, Wellston Police, Luther Police with their K-9 and Lincoln County Emergency Management with a drone,” said Bennett.

Crews searched for seven hours before finally calling off the search. A witness said they saw Roberts wearing a piece of carpet.

“At some point, he had stolen a rug or a piece of carpet that he had wrapped around his shoulder, such as a blanket,” said Bennett, who said temperatures that day were cold.

Very little information on Roberts’ whereabouts surfaced, but Bennett said the office did have some leads.

Roberts has a lengthy criminal history in Lincoln County.

He currently has three warrants for his arrest, including one felony warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Aaron McGee said the stolen vehicle was a side-by-side ATV taken from his daughter’s property back in August.

McGee said the sheriff’s office found Roberts in possession of the ATV a few days after his daughter’s home was the target of multiple break-ins.

“Her house was ransacked,” said McGee. “A guy cut his hair and left some bloody bandages in her bathroom. But the things he stole were guns, body armor, food, and my son-in-law’s clothes.”

McGee said the burglar also killed a cow on the property.

Now, his daughter has packed up her family and moved to California for the time being because she has been fearful. He said it was because there has been no resolution in her case.

“She’s scared to live in her own home,” said McGee. “I think most of the thieves out there are habitual offenders. And because they know they can, there’s literally a license to steal right now. They know there’s no repercussions. And it’s going to continue until there are.”

Lincoln County deputies said they hope leads in the case will help track down Roberts and lead to an arrest soon.
