"We Are Linden" celebrates the neighborhood

Editor's note: Oops, we accidentally sent you last week's newsletter again this morning. Here's today's newsletter. Enjoy!

Good morning, Mobile Newsroomies!

After a whirlwind last couple of weeks, I finally got a chance to stop by the Linden library branch yesterday afternoon to work with my colleague, Dispatch reporter Ceili Doyle. It's only been a week since we started in Linden, but Ceili has made great strides in getting to know the library, its patron and the neighborhood.

On Saturday, Ceili got to spend the afternoon at the 7th annual Linden Block Party.

The party is organized by Ralph Carter, a Linden native and the face behind We Are Linden: the nonprofit organization that hosts the block party and provides youth programming, community outreach and mentorship throughout Linden.

"It's not about me," Carter said. "It's about the community. We Are Linden is the embodiment of the entire community. Our babies need direction and that's my focal point. We want to bring that village back."

Last week was the first time We Are Linden attempted a whole week of festivities leading up to the block party, including a back-to-school drive, hoop session and an "End Gun Violence Walk."

The block party is a celebration of community, love, pride, and a vision for this beloved neighborhood.

Take some time this morning to read Ceili's story. It certainly made me feel connected to Linden in just a few minutes.

Checking in: Remember that story I mentioned last week by reporter Eric Lagatta's story about some Columbus artists transformed some soon-to-be-demolished houses in Whitehall? Well, the houses are gone now, and they went out in epic fashion. Click here to see photojournalist Courtney Hergesheimer's photos and reread Eric's excellent story here for context.

Coming up: Our Mobile Newsroom kickoff event in Linden was a great time! I hope you get a chance to stop by the library branch soon to meet reporters like Ceili Doyle, Taijuan Moorman and Bailey Johnson.

What's happening: Men4Movement, a local nonprofit, will hold its monthly March Against Gun Violence this Sunday. Every month, the group marches to combat the violence. Marches start at 3 p.m. at 996 Oakwood Ave. and will be followed by programming.

As always, thank you for reading! If you aren't already, please consider subscribing to the Dispatch. And if someone sent you this email, make sure you subscribe to this newsletter to never miss an issue.

Until next week,

Sheridan Hendrix
