Linden-McKinley's famous alumni

Happy Wednesday, Mobile Newsroomies!

It feels like our time in Linden is just flying by. I stopped by a few times last week to hang out with my colleague Ceili Doyle (and bring her an iced pumpkin spice latte ... no shame, y'all). It was great to see so many people picking up copies of the paper and taking a minute to read about their neighborhood, as well as meet some new faces.

I've tried to take a different route home from the library each time I've visited, but I always seem to end up passing Linden-McKinley STEM Academy along the way.

Most of the kids outside last week were decked out in football pads and enjoying a much-needed water break from practice during the late-August heat.

Ceili put together a great roundup of the school's famous alumni, many of whom that I had no idea once called Columbus home! From Broadway to the basketball court, Linden-McKinley has schooled a number of notable alums.

Who knows? Maybe one of the students I saw at football practice could be one of the next.

Checking in: Work is set to begin on the long-awaited redevelopment of the former Columbus Castings site, a 71-acre South Side landmark that has sat vacant for years. Reporter Jim Weiker has the story.

Coming up: I'll be on vacation for the next two weeks, so you'll have a special guest writing the newsletter until I get back. Don't miss me too much!

What's happening: There are a few awesome community festivals taking place in previous Mobile Newsroom neighborhoods over the next few weeks. Elevate Northland is hosting the Northland Unity Festival on Sept. 17 from 3-7 p.m. at the North YMCA at 1640 Sandalwood Place.

The festival will host more than 60 vendors, a tamale eating contest, the Nepali Cultural Dance Club, and much more. The event is free. You can learn more at this link. (And I'm begging someone to please enter the tamale eating contest on my behalf.)

As always, thank you for reading! If you aren't already, please consider subscribing to the Dispatch. And if someone sent you this email, make sure you subscribe to this newsletter to never miss an issue.

Until then,
