Jonathan Lindsey, a native of Branch County, has announced his intention to challenge Kim LaSata, incumbent state senator.

Earlier this month, Lindsey said he will seek the seat for the newly formed 17th District, a portion of which includes the current 21st District.

Lindsey acknowledged the circuitous route he’s taking in pursuit of such a high-level office. He is convinced he has a legitimate shot at topping LaSata.

“I’m acutely aware how difficult it is to unseat an incumbent and how infrequently election to the Senate seat happens without first serving as a member of the House or some other more-conventional way,” Lindsey said. “But I made this decision with good guidance and with the expectation that I can win.”

The district encompasses a significant portion of the southern tier of Michigan and includes all of Branch, Cass and St. Joseph counties, and portions of Berrien, Calhoun, Hillsdale and Jackson counties.

"(What is now) the 17th District is where I was born, raised and have lived most of my life,” he said. “I have watched with growing frustration as (17th District residents) have been neglected by their government – federal, state and local. I have also watched as those elected officials tasked with safeguarding our liberty have too often ignored their oaths and abandoned the people. The people of the 17th District are tough patriots who deserve better.”

Lindsey, 37, a Republican, is an alumnus of Bronson High School. He attended Yale University, earning a degree in political science. He served in the U.S. Army Special Forces and has worked throughout the world as an executive in the private sector.

He said Michigan’s economy and returning to a constitutional form of limited government are high priorities.

“We must send new leaders to Lansing who are not afraid to challenge the status quo of failed policies enacted by career politicians,” Lindsey said. “I am committed to restarting the powerful engine of the Michigan economy, ending government overreach, securing our elections and championing traditional conservative values.”

The primary election for the seat will take place in August.
