Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said law enforcement should “take a firm line” at a planned far-right rally in Washington this weekend.
Far-right groups have planned a “Justice for J6” rally in support of those who were charged with crimes in connection to the riot at the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, during which a mob stormed the Capitol complex and delayed the certification of the presidential election results by several hours.
Law enforcement officials are bracing for potential violence at the rally. The House sergeant-at-arms asked members of Congress and their staffs to avoid the Capitol building on Sept. 18.
“If anybody gets out of line, they need to whack ’em,” Graham said.
Capitol Police recently reinstalled temporary fencing around the U.S. Capitol building in response to what it called “concerning online chatter” about the planned rally.
The department announced Wednesday that it asked the Department of Defense for the ability to receive National Guard support should the need arise on Sept. 18.
Organizers of the rally expect about 700 people to attend, according to a permit application.
