Anna Maxwell Martin, known for playing the ultimate ice queen Carmichael in Line of Duty and the much more likeable Julia in Motherland, has landed herself a new lead role.

The actress will lead new ITV true crime drama Delia Balmer (that's just the working title right now, though) alongside Endeavour and Vigil's Shaun Evans.

Maxwell Martin will play Balmer, a woman who survived a near-fatal relationship with the serial killer John Sweeney. Sweeney will be played by Evans.

Line of Duty studio World Productions are on board, with The Pembrokeshire Murders' Nick Stevens on writing duties.

Across the four episodes, the show will tell the story of how Delia met John in 1991 and what happened when their relationship took a dark turn when he attacked her and murdered a former girlfriend.

Although he was arrested, the court made some monumental oversights and granted him bail. He then attacked her again, avoided captured and disappeared.

Delia's fragile recovery was shattered seven years later when John turned up again, having murdered another girlfriend, and she had to gather her courage to relive her torment whilst testifying against him in court to finally get him put away.

"Telling an important story with the excellent team from World Productions, producer Ken Horn, director Julia Ford and a brilliant cast is always an exciting proposition!" Maxwell Martin said. "As it is brought to life by Nick Stevens, hopefully we will do Delia due diligence."

Evans added: "I've previously worked with World Productions and ITV separately, so I'm looking forward to joining forces to tell this story.

"A story that is quite rightly told through the victim's lens, Delia. We have an excellent script from Nick Stevens and I couldn't be more delighted to work with Anna."

Filming commences on Delia Balmer this month.

Line of Duty is streaming on BBC iPlayer, and DVD and Blu-ray boxsets are also available to buy now.
