It is a very sparse week for new DVD and Blu-ray releases, but an offering from a streaming service series deserves a look.

“Special Ops: Lioness” Grade A-: Zoe Saldaña has already shown through the big productions of “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Avatar” that she can handle any action role thrown at her. She puts an exclamation mark on that point with her work in the Paramount+ series “Special Ops: Lioness.”

The streaming service series was inspired by an actual United States military program that trains women to work for the CIA. Their original mission was to get close to any women who are associated with terrorists. The task of collecting information has grown over the years to become a full military operation at times.

Joe (Saldaña) is trying to run the program while dealing with major problems in her own life. Her direct contact with the Lioness Program is Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Donald Westfield (Michael Kelly). They often have to be the protective wall between the team and a government determined to thwart the next 9/11 at any cost.

The problems mount as Joe tries to keep her latest recruit – a rebellious member of the military – focused on the mission. No one counted on deep emotions changing the game plan.

The first season of the Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”) series is now available on a three-disc set. It includes eight episodes and more than 90 minutes of bonus content, including two new featurettes and behind-the-scenes of every episode.
