Lipscomb Academy football coach Trent Dilfer has been targeted as the next UAB coach, according to multiple media outlets.

FootballScoop's John Brice was the first to report.

Brice wrote that UAB school officials "are expected to approach Dilfer with a formal offer to coach the Blazers' program, and those sources said that the Blazers' brass are 'optimistic' that Dilfer will accept."

Dilfer has not responded to a phone message or text seeking comment from The Tennessean.

Dilfer, a Super Bowl winning quarterback, has coached Lipscomb Academy for four seasons. The Mustangs are the top-ranked team in the state, according to the Tennessee Super 25 high school football rankings. Lipscomb Academy (12-0) plays CPA (8-5) at 10 a.m. (CT) Thursday in the TSSAA's Division II-AA state championship game in Chattanooga.

Lipscomb Academy is 42-10 in four seasons under Dilfer, who has never coached in college. He renewed his coaching contract at Lipscomb Academy prior to this season after leading the program to the Division II-AA state championship in 2021.

He was linked to being a job candidate at Fresno State, his alma mater, last season.
