Lisa Baker said God “had a bigger plan” and needed her husband Sgt. Daniel Baker more at a Nashville event honoring victims and survivors of homicide.

She shared her experience Thursday as a widow and memories of Baker, a Dickson County Sheriff’s Office sergeant that “never expected much but would offer a stranger his last dollar if they needed it."

Federal, state, and local public safety officials host the event to honor and remember victims and survivors of homicide. This year, due to the ongoing pandemic, the event was virtual and live streamed from First Baptist Church in downtown Nashville.

Sgt. Daniel Baker, who also served in the Marines, was fatally shot in 2018 in Dickson County while on duty.

Baker said the holidays can be difficult for the survivors. She remembered the Christmas in 2018 after her husband’s death, staying at the beach and not setting up a Christmas tree.

"I think back to that time and realize just how far I have come on my grief journey. I survived that,” Baker said. "I feel that pain now just as intensely as I felt it then, but I have learned how to adapt to it."

"Daniel is part of me and he will always be part of me,” she added.

Names were read aloud during the special ceremony. The Tennessee State Capitol and Korean Veterans Bridge were also lit in purple to honor the event and homicide victims.

Baker said she now tries to live by three sayings:

- "If God brings me to it then he will lead me through it."

-"The broken pieces of the life now shattered, it is impossible to put them back together, especially on your own. Give them to God and let God mold them into something even more beautiful."

-"Strive to be the change that you wish to see in the world."
