Lisa Kudrow Kept Something From Monica and Rachel's Apartment on Friends

When Lisa Kudrow looks back on her time as Phoebe Buffay on Friends, there’s one particular memory that always stands out.

“We were shooting a scene where Phoebe was at Monica and Rachel's apartment, and I had a line that said, 'Oh! I've gotta go!' The only problem was that I wasn't wearing a watch, so how could Phoebe know what time it was?" Kudrow tells InStyle, laughing. "We were in front of a live audience, and my line was coming up, so I started looking around the room, and when I noticed the clock face in the kitchen, I pointed up at it, said my line, and left.”

The only problem? The “clock face” was actually just the front of Monica and Rachel’s cookie jar — not an actual working clock. And though the blooper slipped by some of the crew, Kudrow’s co-star Matthew Perry called her out.

“When the scene ended, Matthew came over to me with this weird little smile on his face,” recalls Kudrow. “He said, ‘Did you just do what I think you did? Did you gesture to the cookie jar as if it were an actual working clock?’ And we all started cracking up because it was maybe the dumbest thing I'd ever done. I don't know if I've ever laughed so hard.”

Kudrow says the cookie jar slip up became a running joke between her and Perry throughout the rest of the show, which aired from September 1994 to May 2004. And when the show wrapped, he surprised her with a gift. “On the last week of filming, Matthew actually gave me the cookie jar as a wrap gift,” she says. “Everything on the set was technically owned by Warner Bros., so he had to ask special permission to take it. And that alone meant so much to me.”

Today, Kudrow keeps the cookie jar in her office where she can see it every day. “I recently realized that it still has a sweet note from Matthew inside it,” she says. “I just reread it, and it makes me want to cry! But mostly, when I look at the jar, I just start to laugh because it reminds me of how much fun we had on set every single day for 10 years.”

Besides the cookie jar, Kudrow also saved boxes of original scripts from the show, as well as some of Phoebe’s rings. “I also have quite a few of the That Girl T-shirts Phoebe wore in the first season,” she says. And with the 25th anniversary of the show coming up Sept. 22, Kudrow says it’s been fun to reminisce, especially about the early days.

“I remember at our first table read, I didn’t really know any of the actors, but I was so blown away by everyone because they were all so hilarious and surprising in their takes, especially Matthew and David [Schwimmer],” she says.

Though Kudrow says she doesn’t watch Friends re-runs (“I don’t. I really don’t!” she laughs), whenever she has re-watched a scene, it certainly makes her smile. “It’s almost as if I’m seeing it for the first time,” she says. “I’m just in awe of how good Jennifer [Aniston] was and how good Courteney [Cox] was and everybody else too. It’s like, ‘Geez, this was really funny!’ The other day, Courteney and I were talking how we barely can remember anything that happened though.”

The frenzy from Cox’s post all but confirms that fans will never stop holding out for a reboot. But Kudrow isn’t all that shocked to see that the beloved sitcom still has such a cult following 25 years later. “It’s not that surprising because Marta [Kauffman] and David [Krane] made a show that’s all about relationships," she says. "That is evergreen.”

So if there was a reboot, what does Kudrow think Phoebe would be up to now? “Hopefully, she'd still be married to Mike [played by Paul Rudd],” she says. “I bet they'd have a kid, or two. And I’d imagine that Phoebe would be a little different once she had kids, you know? But one thing is for sure, she’d definitely still be fun.”
