List of Powerball numbers: No pattern or magic formula, but these oddities caught our eye

How does one pick winning lottery numbers?

In mere months of rollovers, the Powerball lottery jackpot has soared into the Top 10 list of largest Powerball prizes in U.S. history at $900 million. Will you become a multimillionaire from a $2 Powerball ticket?

Many players rely on a "quick pick" automated option when purchasing their tickets from a retailer and some consistently play routine "lucky" numbers.

There is no wrong way to choose Powerball numbers. There's also no magic formula to pick the winning numbers.

But ... we went back and looked at the winning numbers for every drawing since the jackpot started at $20 million in April. We didn't find a particular pattern. And we were reminded again why the odds are so low.

Long list of Mega Millions numbers: No pattern or magic formula, but these oddities caught our eye, too

Some things to know:

  • According to Powerball.com, players have a 1 in 292.2 million chance to match all six numbers. The odds of winning Powerball remain the same whether the jackpot is $20 million or $1 billion. Players do have a 1 in 24.9 chance of winning a prize, powerball.com states. Prizes range from $2 to the grand prize.

  • This Powerball jackpot has rolled over since April 22. Before that, one ticket purchased in Ohio matched all six numbers to win the Wednesday, April 19, lottery jackpot of $252.6 million. The prize was claimed by the Crazy Luck Trust with John Krajewski as trustee. It was Ohio's fifth-largest jackpot prize, news reports show, and the ticket was purchased at GetGo Cafe and Market in Macedonia, Ohio.

Here's a look back at Powerball winning numbers since the last big drawing and other details about the jackpots. Check back for updates until the grand prize nets a winner − as of July 17, 2023, the jackpot soared to $900 million.
