Here’s a list of Triangle school closings, advisories as Idalia storms approach NC

This list will be updated as more school systems announce their plans. Please check back for a fuller report.

Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida on Wednesday morning as a Category 3 hurricane and is pushing toward North Carolina.

The storm has since weakened to a tropical storm and is expected to impact North Carolina’s coast and inland areas.

The National Weather Service has a hazardous weather outlook in place for the central part of the state, forecasting strong winds and heavy rain. The Raleigh area could get 1 to 2 inches of rain from Wednesday evening to Thursday evening.

Here’s a list of Triangle public schools that have announced closings.

Wake County

The Wake County Public School System has not announced any changes in schedule or closings.

Durham County

Durham Public Schools has not announced any changes in schedule or closings.

Orange County

As of early Thursday evening, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools planned to be open and operate on a normal schedule Thursday. The school system will communicate updates to the public through email, its website and social media.

The Orange County Schools has not announced any changes in schedule or closings.

Chatham County

Chatham Charter School in Siler City will open at 10 am for K-12 students and staff are directed to report to work by 9:20 a.m. Thursday. The campus will open for students at 9:30 am. All after school activities Thursday are canceled.

Johnston County

Johnston County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday; this includes all after-school activities on Thursday. “This decision has been made out of an abundance of caution and per the guidance of local and state emergency service officials,” the system stated in a news release.

Lee County

Central Carolina Academy in Sanford will operate in an asynchronous remote learning format on Thursday, a school spokesperson said. All after school activities for Thursday are canceled.

Students should login to Canvas to complete assignments. Eleventh graders taking college courses will need to continue working on course assignments.

Ascend Leadership Academy will have remote learning only, according to ABC11.
