The New Hampshire attorney general has launched an investigation into robocalls impersonating US President Joe Biden, which encouraged voters not to turn out for the state’s 2024 primary.

In a statement, the attorney general said the voice recording “appears to be artificially generated based on initial indications” and appeared “to be an unlawful attempt to disrupt” the election and “suppress” voters.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed the "call was indeed a fake and not recorded by the president.

“The president has been clear that there are risks associated with deep fakes. Fake images and misinformation can be exacerbated by emerging technologies,” she said.

New Hampshire resident Nathan Bradley recorded his answering machine, which picked up one of the fake calls.

“This coming Tuesday is the New Hampshire presidential preference primary,” a voice that sounds like Joe Biden says.

“Republicans have been trying to push nonpartisan and Democratic voters to participate in their primary. What a bunch of malarkey,” the message continues, before the recording cuts off.

The reports of robocalls came after a shakeup to the initial voting schedule outlined by the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Democratic primaries kicked off in New Hampshire on January 23, the first in the US, despite the DNC marking South Carolina as first on their calendar.
