LISTEN: Sheriff updates investigation into deadly shooting following teen football practice

Saying only a few people know what really happened, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters says detectives are making progress on a weekend drive-by shooting that left a 13-year-old boy dead.

Speaking live on Jacksonville’s Morning News Monday, Waters was asked if Saturday’s shooting was targeted.

“We are looking at relationship, we’re looking at social media posts, we’re looking at all that stuff to try to determine if it’s targeted or not.”, Waters said.

According to Waters, an 11-year-old boy is recovering. The driver, who was the boys’ football coach, is hospitalized with serious injuries.

Saturday night’s shooting happened on Moncrief Road and New Kings Road after a football tryout at the Legends Center.

JSO says they don’t have a suspect right now, but they are looking through surveillance video, talking with witnesses and listening to 911 calls.

The shooting even choked up JSO’s Director of Investigations and Homeland Security.

“Anytime a child or anyone loses their life in our community it’s disturbing when it’s a 13-year-old, it’s unacceptable,” Shawn Coarsey said on Saturday night.
