Literacy in focus at Sebring Local night event
SEBRING – Sebring Local Schools let its youngest students “tackle reading” during an event Saturday night at Schaefer-Davies Football Stadium.
It was the second consecutive year for the event, during which staff and volunteers led students, accompanied by their families and guardians, through games and other activities that aimed to boost literacy.
“Literacy Under the Lights” stressed the district’s “readers are leaders” initiative.
Community members were invited to read books under the lights, participate in educational activity stations and interact with special guests, including Northeast Ohio author Sally Kurjan and her one-eyed rescue dog Bernie, the star of her series, “Bernie the One-Eyed Puppy.”
Dispersed across the football field, the stations focused on literacy and language, led by Sebring McKinley High School athletes and students from the school’s clubs and organizations, as well as Sebring staff.
“This gives our elementary students the opportunity to interact with our older students, establishing role models for them, while participating in fun and educational activities together,” said Jill Dennis, family engagement coordinator for Sebring Local Schools.
Other special guests were Sebring Library’s mascot “Booker the Bear” and the Texas Roadhouse mascot Andy the Armadillo.
Students will earned purple postcards for displaying and reciting the B.L. promise, “Be responsible, be respectful, be safe and be positive,” an activity organized by members of the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports team.
“We are thankful for the tremendous support our community has provided for this event, as well as the hard work, preparation and participation of our students and staff,” Dennis said.
