The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called a representative of the Russian Embassy and handed him a diplomatic note expressing "strong protest against illegal actions against Lithuanian citizens," stated in the press release of FM of Lithuania on Feb. 14.

The reason was Russia's decision to put Lithuanian Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and Estonian Secretary of State Taimar Peterkop, and other politicians on the wanted list for demolishing Soviet monuments.

It pointed out that the decisions of the Russian Federation "contradict generally recognized norms of international law, demonstrate attempts to falsify the past, and disrespect the historical memory of Lithuania."

The Russian FM confirmed its actions on Feb. 13, but did not say when the names of the Baltic politicians were added to the list.

The Lithuanian FM demanded an immediate end to the politically motivated persecution of its citizens.

Kallas said that the Russian Interior Ministry's putting her on the wanted list is a common Russian intimidation tactic.
