Little Falls' win over Herkimer highlights Section III football's regular season finale

The Little Falls Mounties wasted little time taking a lead on the road Friday and closed out a six-win regular season with a 41-8 win over the Herkimer Magicians.

The win clinches the No. 2 spot in Class D East and home game in the Section III quarterfinals next week.

Junior Braden McCumber ran for a touchdown on the third play of the game and scored three more times for the Mounties (6-2, 4-1 D East) and senior Chase Regan added two touchdowns in the team's sixth win in seven games. The Mounties received the opening kickoff and moved down the field quickly on passes from Braydon Langdon to Regan and McCumber. McCumber ran five yards for a touchdown 47 seconds into the game and Xavier kicked the extra point.

The stingy Little Falls defense that held a fourth opponent under 10 points forced a quick punt by Herkimer (1-7, 1-4 D East) and McCumber scored again just over three minutes later, crossing the goal line from two yards out on the play after a 17-yard run.

The Mounties fumbled the ball away at Herkimer's 8-yard line on their next possession but Regan intercepted a pass after the teams switched ends and ran it back 85 yards for a touchdown on the first pay of the second quarter.

Regan (five yards) and McCumber (45) ran for touchdowns less than two minutes apart and the Little Falls lead was 35-0 at halftime. Regan scored two plays after Little Falls stopped Herkimer on a fourth down and one play after Dunn made a juggling catch on a 65-yard pass from Langdon. McCumber's touchdown came on the play after an interception.

McCumber ran seven yards for his fourth touchdown in the third quarter and finished with 110 yards on 10 carries.Langdon completed six of the nine passes he threw for 135 yards. Chase Regan had four receptions for 50 yards, ran the ball four times and scored twice.

Matt Verri intercepted two Herkimer passes and the Mounties were credited with two blocked punts on special teams.

Herkimer put its six points on the board late in the game. Nick Petucci fumbled as he neared the goal line and Magicians lineman Matthew Audycki pounced on the ball in the end zone with 2:20 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Petucci, who ran for 40 yards on four carries on the Herkimer scoring drive, ran in the conversion.

The six victories are the most in one season for Little Falls since the 2014 team won six consecutive games and finished 6-3 in NFF competition. The Mounties were 8-1 in 2005 when they won Class D East with a perfect 5-0 record in league play.
