Little Free Library added to list of amenities at Longfellow Park

Oct. 25—There's a new library in town and this one doesn't require having a library card or have due dates. It's a Little Free Library that's been built by consumers at DSI and it's located in Longfellow Park.

"The idea for this started a couple of years ago," said Heather Elliott who helped spearhead the library with Eryk Boomershine. "Eryk and I both enjoy books and we thought this was a way to share of our love of books with others."

Located near the skate park, the Little Free Library features titles for readers of all ages and abilities.

"Visitors can take a book and leave a book," said Elliott as Jerry Queen, Boomershine and Robbie Pennington placed books in the quaint wooden box. "If you see something you'd like to read, take it. If you have a book you'd like to pass on, leave it."

Elliott said as the library gets used more, additional books will be needed to keep its shelves full.

"If anyone is interested in donating books, they can put in the library," she said adding she can be contacted at helliott@dsiservicesorg as well.

In the coming months, the Little Free Library that was put together by DSI consumers, will be joined by an inclusive playground that Comforting Hearts, a support group that connects children and families with special needs, hopes to put in place.

"We are still hoping we can have the playground in by next summer," said April Barnes Hunt, who started Comforting Hearts. "We are still raising money for that and are looking for a playground vendor."

Barnes Hunt said the group is currently selling T-shirts and Nov. 19 a silent auction and fun fest will take place at Eastside Park's community building.
