Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Nicholas Languerand of Little River pleaded guilty to assault for his involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot in Washington, DC. On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 44 months in prison and was ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution. (WBTW)

  2. A Fayetteville, North Carolina woman has been charged with murder in the shooting death of De-Erica Fisher, also of Fayetteville, last weekend in a field in Longs. 3. There has been a slight dip in hospitalizations due to COVID-19 around the United States, and Horry County is seeing that as well. As of the latest report, the three hospitals surveyed showed 162 beds occupied by confirmed or suspected COVID-19 patients. The number of COVID-19 patients occupying ICU beds in the three hospitals surveyed is 45. This data is from hospitalizations through January 20, 2022. (Myrtle Beach Patch)

  4. Horry County Solid Waste Authority wants your input for a landfill expansion project. The landfill off highway 90 is being looked at for expansion to 42 acres, and also to add more years to the "life" of the landfill. A committee meeting is being held on January 31st at 4:00 p.m., and the public is welcome to attend. (WMBF)

  5. Opioid manufacturers have settled with the State of South Carolina to award the state a portion of a $26 billion settlement towards opioid treatment over the next 17 years. • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Turn your volume up🔈 We’d like to introduce you to the biggest and whiniest (a tad dramatic) baby: Ace! This 3-year-old pittie whines/screams ALLLLL day in the kennel! Once he’s out of the kennel, Ace is beyond happy and excited. He’s built like a butterball turkey and is full of personality. Ace is a frisky boy, who loves hard and will smother your face in the sloppiest kisses. He is used to living in a home, but, unfortunately, Ace is heartworm positive. We need to raise the funds for his treatment before Ace can go to his furever home. Murray Law Offices has generously sponsored a portion of his treatment, but we still need to raise $320. Help us change Ace’s cries to cheers of joy! (Facebook)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
