HARBOR SPRINGS — Blossom’s Adoption Readiness Center recently opened its doors at the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in Harbor Springs.

Located next to the shelter building on their West Conway Road campus, the center houses new arrivals while they quarantine for a short period and are made ready for adoption prior to being moved to the main building. It also mitigates the risk of disease since new arrivals are temporarily housed in a building apart from other shelter residents.

The building was funded by the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation at $15,000, David Gottlieb at $25,000, Sarah Gottlieb at $25,000, and the BISSELL Pet Foundation at $50,000.

The humane society also recently launched their intra-state Movin’ On Up Program, an initiative between the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society and a coalition of shelter partners throughout southern Michigan. The purpose of the program is to transport vulnerable dogs north and place them into new homes. This includes dogs who are at a higher risk of euthanasia, including those who are heartworm positive, senior animals and other with other extenuating medical conditions. Coalition partners include Bark Nation, Dog Aide, Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society and Detroit Animal Care and Control.

Last year, the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society rescued over 760 animals and 372 of those were through transport.

“These groups in Detroit are working hard for these dogs and we know they need help,” said Little Traverse Bay Humane Society Director of Operations Elise Ramsey. “There are just too many animals and not enough homes. This is not a Detroit problem. It’s an everybody problem. We have the capacity to help, and we will.”

There will be a ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 31 for the new Adoption Readiness Center.
