Replay: Austin-area high school football kicks off Week 5 games Friday

Week five of Austin-area high school games ramps up Friday as rivals Lake Travis and Westlake duel in what is the most high-profile Austin-area matchup of the year. On Thursday, Weiss battled Harker Heights in the school's first foray into Class 6A district play. Follow along below with us as the American-Statesman keeps you up to date on all the Central Texas preps action on Friday:

Hutto Falls to Midway

Hutto dropped its District 12-6A opener to Midway 48-37. The Hippos fall to 3-2 on the season.

Chaps Hold on for 44th in a Row

Jaden Greathouse's touchdown catch with 1:50 remaining in the 4th quarter sealed Westlake's 35-20 win over Lake Travis at Chaparral Stadium Friday night.

Westlake is now 4-0 on the season, 2-0 in district play as Lake Travis sinks below the .500 mark as they are now 2-3, 1-2 in district play

Johnson Wins Again

After starting the season 0-3, Johnson won its second straight district game as the Jaguars dumped Anderson 38-21 at Shelton Stadium. The Jags push their district mark to 2-1, while Anderson slips below .500 at 2-3, 2-1 in district action.

Finals Rolling In

Lockhart 56, Cedar Creek 21 - Lockhart advances to 4-1 on season while Cedar Creek is 0-5.

LaGrange 38, Splendora 7 - LaGrange is 2-3.

St. Michael's 42, SA St. Anthony's 0

Thorndale 36, Schulenburg 7 - Thorndale 4-1 on the campaign.

Westlake Capitalizing on Lake Travis Fumbles

For the second time in second half, Westlake has taken advantage of Lake Travis miscues as Jack Kayser scores his second touchdown in the second half.

Westlake looking to earn its 44th win in a row is now up 28-13 with 10:21 remaining in the contest.

College Station has knocked Leander from the unbeaten ranks as the Cougars pulled away from the Lions in the second half to win 38-10.

Kayser Expands Chap Lead

Jack Kayser's 41-yard scamper up the middle through the heart of the Lake Travis defense has given Westlake a 21-13 lead over Lake Travis in the Battle of the Lakes.

College Station leads Leander 38-10 midway through the 4th quarter.

A&M Consolidated held on to defeat Georgetown 48-34.

La Grange is up 38-7 over Splendora, while Bowie has dented the scoreboard against Dripping Springs. The Tigers are up 41-7 early in the 4th stanza.

Glenn Opens District Play With a Win

In its first season in 5A Division 1, Glenn wins its 11-5A district opener as the Grizzlies dumped Hendrickson 38-28.

Late in the 4th, Hyde Park will stay unbeaten as they lead TMI Episcopal 35-12 with a minute remaining in the game. Hyde Park will start Phil Dawson's inaugural season as head coach 4-0.

In 4A play, La Grange is up 32-7 over Splendora beginning the 4th quarter.

Midway has recaptured the lead against Hutto 34-31 with 6:29 in the 3rd quarter.

Regents shut out SA Christian 55-0, while Liberty Hill buried Tivy 63-6.

Greathouse Puts Chaps in Front

Westlake capitalized on a fumble recovery deep in Lake Travis territory as Jaden Greathouse's touchdown catch to give Westlake a 14-13 lead with 7:03 left in the third quarter.

In other action, Lago Vista leads Smithville 27-8 in the 3rd, Johnson leads Anderson 17-14 in the 3rd quarter. Wimberley is up on Lampasas 24-14 in the 3rd.

In 5A play, Glenn is 10 better than Hendrickson, 38-28, in the 4th stanza. Lockhart is 3 TDs up on Cedar Creek 33-14.

College Station Pulling Away

College Station has expanded its lead to 24-3 at the end of the third quarter of unbeaten Leander.

A correction - Cedar Park is up on East View 45-17 in the fourth quarter.

East View Dominating Cedar Park

East View has opened a 38-17 lead in the third quarter at Gupton Stadium in 11-5A D1 action.

For the 4th consecutive week, Liberty Hill has scored at least 49 points, as the Panthers lead Tivy 49-0 in the 3rd quarter.

Bastrop and Comal Pieper are tied at 21 in the third quarter.

Belton leads Pflugerville 28-7 in the 4th stanza.

Novosad Over 200 Yards in First Half

Per the Statesman's Thomas Jones, Austin Novasad, Dripping Springs quarterback, is 20 for 22 passing for 204 yards with 4 scoring tosses as the Tigers have raced to a 34-0 halftime lead against Bowie. Kyle Koch leads the receivers with 8 catches for 73 yards and a score.

Meanwhile in other 6A action, Hutto leads Midway 28=26 at the half.

Dripping Springs Shows No Sign of Rust

Despite a bye week last week, Dripping Springs is picking up where it left off two weeks ago when the Tigers dismantled Austin High 77-0.

The Tigers have yet to give up a point in district action as Dripping Springs are up 34-0 over Bowie at the first half.

Austin Novosad has fired 4 TDs passes, the last a 19-yard dart to Boston Papp.

Texans Take Lead

After spotting Lampasas a 7-0 lead, unbeaten Wimberley has rebounded to take a 17-7 lead over the Badgers with 2:02 left in the opening half.

Geronimo Navarro is on top of Giddings 12-7 with 2:11 left to play in the opening half. Lago Vista is up on Smithville 20-8 at the half.

Midway has battled back to take a 26-21 lead over Hutto with 4:04 left in half.

St. Michael's is up 20-0 in the second quarter over SA St. Anthony.

Lake Travis is trying to end Westlake's 43-game win streak and the Cavaliers are up 10-7 at the half.

Rioux Puts Cavs Back in Front

Hunter Rioux's 35-yard field goal has given Lake Travis a 10-7 lead over Westlake with 1:16 remaining in the opening half.

Meanwhile, Dripping Spring's Austin Novosad has matched his season-total of 3 TD passes, with a trio in the first half has the Tigers are all over Bowie 27-0 with 2:05 left in the first half.

Anderson Takes the Lead

Early in the second quarter, Anderson has taken a 7-3 lead over Johnson at Shelton Stadium in a 26-6A contest.

Westlake has responded to the Lake Travis TD as Brett Skinner hits Bryce Chambers with a TD pass with 5:10 left in the half. All even at 7.

Hutton and Midway are even at 14 early in the second quarter.

Cavs Draw First Blood

Leon Kadyn finds Sam Self for a 16-yard pass over the middle as Lake Travis has jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 6:43 remaining in the opening stanza.

Elsewhere, Georgetown has scored on a 10-yard run by Andrew Petter. The Tigers lead 21-6 in the second quarter.

In College Station, College Station has taken advantage of Leander's miscue on a punt attempt from their own 29 to score to push its lead to 10-0 in the second quarter.

Elgin is up on Connally 15-0 with 9:13 remaining before half, while Lampasas scored first to take a 7-0 lead on Wimberley with 8:10 remaining in the opening stanza.

Tigers Not Hanging Heads After Early Fumble

After fumbling on its initial snap, A&M Consolidated has scored on its next 3 possessions to race to a 21-0 lead over Georgetown at Birkelbach Field at the end of the first quarter.

In other first quarter action, College Station still leads Leander 3-0, Hendrickson and Glenn are deadlocked at 7 apiece. Cedar Park and East View are still tied at 7 in the first, while Liberty Hill has jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Kerrville Tivy

Lions and Cougars Lead Early

In 5A action, Lockhart has scored first, jumping up on Cedar Creek 7-0 with 9:38 remaining in the opening stanza. College has taken an early 3-0 lead over Leander as the Cougars kicked a field goal on its opening series.

After stopping Georgetown inside their own 15, A&M Consolidated marched down the field to take a 6-0 lead with 4:24 remaining in the first quarter.

Cedar Park and East View are knotted at 7 in the first, and Belton has jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Pflugerville.

Eagles Force Early Turnover

After going three-and-out on its opening possession, Georgetown forced a turnover on A&M Consolidated first snap to take over at the Tiger 32.

Facing a 4th and two, Georgetown eschewed a field goal attempt and the Eagles' Andrew Petter was stopped a yard short on a short run up the middle.

Ducks Flying High (Correction)

3-1 Taylor is looking for its first 4-game win streak since 2017 tonight as the high-flying Ducks entertain Jarrell in a 4A tilt.

The Ducks' potent offense has averaged over 40 points in the last 3 weeks, while Jarrell is looking for its second win after a 1-3 start.

Other 5A Games of Note

Another of the area’s unbeaten squads, 4-0 Hays looks to make it 5 in a row as the Hawks visit 2-2 Boerne Champion in a District 12-5A Division 1 tussle.

Highlighting the 5A D2 schedule, 2021’s D2 runner-up Liberty Hill is opening its District 13 slate by hosting the 2-2 Antlers of Kerville Tivy. The Panthers are averaging 453 yards a game on the ground with their potent Slot-T offense.

Lockhart is looking to rebound from its initial loss of the season, as it hosts 0-4 Cedar Creek in District 13-5A D2 action.

After a winless 2021 campaign, Elgin looks to keep its momentum moving forward as the 3-1 Wildcats take to the road to face 0-4 Connally at The Pfield.

11-5A Division 1 Debuts

With a few new faces, District 11-5A Division 1 kicks off district play tonight.

Highlighting the night’s schedule, the only district squad that is unbeaten, Leander, will have its hands full as they travel to College Station to face the defending 5A Division 1 runner-up College Station.

College Station fell 27-24 in overtime to Katy Paetow at AT&T Stadium to finish last year 15-1.

In other district play, 2-1 Georgetown hosts 2-1. A&M Consolidated, while 2-1 Glenn is hosting 1-2 Hendrickson.

Cedar Park and East View are both searching for their first wins on the campaign at Gupton Stadium.

Hutto and San Marcos in Action

Hutto will launch its District 12-6A slate tonight as the 3-1 Hippos will take on winless Waco Midway, while San Marcos (2-2) closes out its non-district schedule at the Rattlers host unbeaten Eagle Pass.

The Hippos are led by QB Will Hammond who has accounted for 1199 total yards and 116 touchdowns.

In other 6A action on Thursday, Weiss dropped its district opener last night, falling to Harker Heights 28-21 at The Pfield.

25-6A Takes the Weekend Off

After opening district play last week, the squads of District 25-6A are enjoying the bye week before resuming league play next week.

Round Rock and Manor are the only unbeaten teams, both sporting 4-0 marks, while Stony Point, Vandegrift and Westwood have started the season 3-1.

Vista Ridge and McNeil are level at 2-2, while perennial playoff qualifier Cedar Ridge sits at 1-3 after opening its season with a win over Cedar Park.

Unbeaten Dripping Springs and Bowie Square Off at Burger

In other 26-6A action, in its inaugural season of 6A action, Dripping Springs, will travel across Highway 290 to Burger Stadium sporting a perfect record (3-0, 1-0) to face (4-0, 2-0) Bowie in a early-season district tilt that could go a long way to determine playoff qualifiers.

The visiting Tigers are led by Baylor commit, Austin Novosad, who is averaging 210 passing yards a game.

The Dawgs are led offensively by running back Max Barnes, who is averaging 151.75 yards per game toting the rock.

In other 26-6A action tonight, Anderson looks to break a 2-game skid as the (2-2, 0-2) Trojans travel to Buda to face Johnson at Bob Shelton Stadium. The Jaguars earned their first 6A district win by outscoring Del Valle 49-22 last week.

Last night, Del Valle earned its first win of the season 42-0 whitewashing of Akins. Austin High (1-3, 1-1) has the weekend off before returning to action next Thursday at Bowie.

Battle of the Lakes

In what has become a marquee matchup, Westlake and Lake Travis will renew their rivalry with a 7:30 kick in a District 26-6A tilt.

Westlake (3-0, 1-0) is sporting a 43-game winning streak, since its last loss, a 26-25 nailbiter on October 11, 2019, to the Cavaliers. Since that time the 3-0 Chaps have won 3 consecutive state championships. Westlake is led by 3 Power 5 commits. WR Jaden Greathouse has pledged to Notre Dame, while fellow wideout Keaton Kubecka has committed to Kansas. Defensively, the Chaps are led by Oklahoma commit Colton Vasek.

Lake Travis (2-2, 2-0), winners of a state-best 5 consecutive state titles from 2007-2011 have yet to have their Michigan State quarterback commit Bo Edmundson in action this fall.
