Tuesday marks a memorable moment in Kentucky as Gov. Andy Beshear is sworn in for four more years in office. And The Courier Journal will be there throughout the day.
Inauguration events begin with a breakfast reception at 8:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day, with a parade planned at 11 a.m. to precede the swearing-in ceremony that starts at 2 p.m.
Beshear and Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman were sworn in at a midnight ceremony. The events of the day are ceremonial. But they'll offer a first look at Beshear's final term in office, set to last through 2027.
Our coverage will update throughout the day, and KET will offer televised coverage as well as a livestream at ket.org. Here's an early look at what's happening — beginning with a look at the day's schedule.
Wonder why duels are part of the oath?
Kentucky is the only state in the country where the swearing-in ceremony of people taking their oath of office routinely elicits giggles from those present.

Parade marches toward Kentucky Capitol on Inauguration Day
Crowds began to pick up in Frankfort just before 11 a.m. — the start of the Inaugural Parade.
The route stretched along Capitol Avenue through Frankfort to the steps of the Kentucky State Capitol, with health care and public education employees serving as grand marshals.
Beshear and other state officials were cheered by onlookers who took to both sides of the street on the sunny morning. They were joined on the route by marching bands from schools around Kentucky along with vehicles from other agencies and businesses — including BlueOval SK, the company partnering with Ford on a massive electric vehicle battery plant being built in Glendale, a key economic development in Beshear’s first term.
Beshear speaks with supporters before Inauguration Day parade
Before the parade, Gov. Andy Beshear circulated in the crowd, shaking hands.
One supporter he talked to was Karen L. Jeffries, 68, who was born and raised in Frankfort and would attend inaugurations with her father as a child. This year is the first one she’s attended in decades. She said she wanted to attend to support Beshear, whose action during the COVID-19 pandemic touched her and her family. Her family used to help babysit a child who died during the pandemic, she said.

Inaugural Breakfast Reception
Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman was greeted with cheers at the day’s first event, the Inaugural Breakfast Reception at Frankfort’s Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.
After performances by the Second Street School choir and Kentucky State University Faculty/Student Jazz Collective, Coleman thanked the crowd for attending and said she looked forward to getting more accomplished in office (and an Inauguration Day with a warmer forecast than the 2019 ceremony).
“I’m looking so forward to what these next four years hold,” she told the crowd. “… Gov. Beshear and I are so grateful for your friendship, for your partnership and what we will continue to do together — not just in Frankfort and Franklin County, but across the commonwealth for the next four years.”Beshear and his family, meanwhile, arrived just before 9:30 a.m. for the Inaugural Worship Service at nearby First Christian Church.
