The first round of the 2022 Memorial Tournament went off without a weather delay, and the rest of the week looks splendid. Oh, and there were plenty of birdies, eagles, and frustration on the course.

Hideki Matsuyama was the highlight of the first round for all the wrong reasons. He was disqualified because he used a club that was deemed to give him an unfair advantage.

Big names like Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay — the past three Memorial champions — Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, Xander Shauffele, Jordan Spieth and Victor Hovland had decent to solid rounds, but are all at least two shots off the lead.

Live Memorial Tournament updates for Friday: Who's making the cut at the 2022 Memorial Tournament?

Cameron Young, Luke List, Cameron Smith, K.H. Lee, Mackenzie Hughes and Davis Riley all finished 5-under par to enter Friday as co-leaders.

Will Zalatoris, who lost in a playoff to Justin Thomas at the PGA Championship two weeks ago, had a round-high eight birdies, but finished one shot back with a 4-under, 68.

Will Zalatoris: ‘Crazy’ first-round proves he should be a contender this week at Memorial

Smith and Zalatoris each said the greens were soft from the rain, which allowed them to play more aggressively.

"The greens around here are about as good as it gets," Smith said. "You know they're going to be consistent. Just really need to hit fairways, being able to control the ball into the greens."

Here's the recap from the day.

5:37 p.m. – Davis Riley ends first round in a tie for the lead

Make it six players finishing the first round at the Memorial Tournament with a 5-under, 67. Davis Riley surged late with an eagle on No. 15, and recovered from a bogey on No. 16 with a birdie on the 17th hole to end the day tied for the lead.

Sahith Theegala, a PGA Tour rookie with three top-10 finishes in his career and no wins, had a bogey on the final hole to finish 4-under with two other players.

5:04 p.m. – Mackenzie Hughes chips in to make it a seven-way tie at the top

From below the hole just about a slope down to the creek in front of the ninth green, Mackenzie Hughes chipped in for birdie to end his first round at 5-under, 67. Hughes' finish guarantees there will be at least a five-way tie atop the leaderboard to begin round two.

4:19 p.m. – Theegala, Riley join leaders

Sahith Theegala and Davis Riley are now tied for the lead at 5-under. Theegala forged a tie with a birdie on the No. 5 hole. He chipped in from almost 26 feet from the rough. Davis has had a blistering back nine. He birdied the 11th, 12th and 13th holes and made eagle on the par-5 15th hole. He made a 17-foot putt for the eagle.

3:35 p.m. - Matsuyama DQ'd

Hideki Matsuyama, the 2014 Memorial winner and 2021 Masters champion, was disqualified Thursday. Matsuyama was 3 over par at the time. He was disqualified for using a non-conforming club. Someone on his team applied paint to the face of his wood, which in theory could affect the spin on a ball, a violation of golf rules.

3:25 p.m. – Morning leaders remain on top

The morning leaders at 5-under par — Cameron Young, Cameron Smith, Luke List and K.H. Lee - remain atop the leaderboard with all the afternoon golfers on the couse. Corey Conners also reached 5-under but bogeyed No. 17, his eighth hole. Sahith Theegala is also at 4-under.

2:45 p.m. – Corey Conners with five birdies through six holes

A couple of golfers are beginning to emerge at the top of the leaderboard in the afternoon wave of players. Canadian Corey Conners birdied No. 15 to jump into a five-way tie at 5-under. He also teed off the back nine, so he still has 12 holes to play in round one.

The No. 140th ranked golfer in the world is also beginning the first round hot. Sahith Theegala is 4-under through his first seven holes.

2 p.m. - Players taking advantage of soft greens

From the rain this morning and last night, the greens allowed players in the morning wave to be aggressive on their approach shots.

"We had to land the ball 10 paces short of pin on Tuesday and now you can throw it right next to the stick with the rain overnight," said Jordan Spieth, who shot 2-under and had four birdies.

Will Zalatoris had the busiest scorecard of the morning with eight birdies and four bogeys.

"I'm shocked at how this place has softened up, with the weather we've had," he said. "Monday and Tuesday was probably one of the firmer practice rounds I think I've had in my short stint out here."
